WeberHeading into this afternoon’s final eight-game match play round of the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Storm, PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber moved into the lead after the sixth round thanks to a 6-2 match play record and 1,753 actual pinfall total (219 average).

Weber is trying for his first win of the season and fourth of his career. He’s also trying to win his second PBA50 major after winning the USBC Senior Masters in his 2013 rookie season. He can also join Norm Duke, currently in second, as the only players to win the U.S. Open on both the PBA and PBA50 Tours.

After this afternoon’s round, the top four players will be determined for the stepladder finals which will get underway at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) at the Suncoast Bowling Center and will be covered live on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame.

With a 9,495 42-game pinfall including match play bonus pins, Weber leads Duke who is 64 pins behind with a 9,431 pinfall.

If the pair can maintain the top two spots it will set up a possible rematch from last year’s title match in which Duke defeated Weber 214-174 for the win.

The win was a stepping stone for Duke’s PBA50 Player of the Year and Rookie of the crown in 2014 and becoming the first player to win the U.S. Open on both the PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour.

In third is five-time PBA Tour champion Eric Forkel of nearby Henderson, Nev., just one pin back of Duke with 9,430. Forkel is trying to improve upon a previous best Senior U.S. Open finish of third which came in 2013.

Currently in fourth with a 9,329 pinfall is Amleto Monacelli who can write another chapter in his Hall of Fame career by becoming the Senior U.S. Open’s first three-time winner. He won back-to-back in 2012 and 2013.

Former major league all-star pitcher and PBA50 Tour rookie John Burkett is currently in 17th with a 12-11-1 match play record and 8,873 pinfall. He is trying to improve upon his previous best PBA50 Tour finish of 24th which came in the Sun Bowl In The Villages earlier in the season.
