Sweden’s Svensson, Texan Malott, Four Women Advance to Final Rounds in Bahrain

Jesper Svensson, a 20-year-old two-handed player from Sweden, and newly-crowned Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Champion Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, were PBA members who advanced from Friday’s elimination rounds of the 13th Kingdom of Bahrain International Open to Saturday’s final rounds at Ozone Entertainment Center.

Svensson, Malott and four women advanced from Friday’s Round 3 to Saturday’s elimination Round 4 where they will compete along with Tom Daugherty, Tampa, Fla.; Mika Koivuniemi, Finland; Mike Fagan, Fort Worth, Texas; Jason Belmonte, Australia; Tommy Jones, Simpsonville, S.C., and Martin Larsen, Sweden, who earned “byes” during the qualifying portion of the event. The women who advanced from Round 3 are Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y.; Bernice Lim of Singapore, Jazreel Tan of Singapore, and Cherie Tan of Singapore.

The top six from the six-game Round 4 will advance to Round 5 where they will be joined by Tannya Roumimper of Indonesia, the winner of last week’s H.H. Emir Cup in Qatar, along with Marshall Kent, Yakima, Wash.; Tim Mack, Indianapolis; Ildemaro Ruiz, Venezuela; Khaled Al Dubyyan, Kuwait, and Yousif Falah, Bahrain, who also earned byes as the top six qualifiers.

Round 5 will determine the three players who will remain in contention for the title and $25,000 first prize. Qualifiers 2 and 3 will bowl a one-game semifinal match with the winner bowling Qualifier No. 1 for the title (the semifinal round winner must defeat the top qualifier twice in order to win the title).

Men and women in Bahrain are also competing for World Bowling Tour points on a rolling two-year points list that will result in the top three in each division competing in the World Bowling Tour Finals presented by PBA at the 2015 PBA World Series of Bowling VII in Las Vegas next fall. In addition, a PBA Tour title will be awarded to the winner if he is a PBA member. None of the women finalists, who each receive 7 handicap pins per game, are PBA members.
