by Bob Johnson 0

The PBA has announced a 12-tournament PBA50 Tour schedule for 2014 which includes two new venues, a new PBA50 Super Senior event and traditional major championships — the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Dexter and the USBC Senior Masters — back-to-back in Las Vegas in June.

For the second consecutive year, a season-long point competition will qualify the top three players for the televised PBA50 Tour Finals, which will be conducted during the 2014 PBA World Series of Bowling VI in November.

In addition, selected PBA50 Tour events will again be webcast live on the online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. Details regarding the televised finals and Xtra

Frame schedule will be announced later.

For the second consecutive year, the season begins with the PBA50 Pasco County

Open at Lane Glo Bowl in New Port Richey, Fla., April 12-15, and concludes with the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort and Casino Open presented by Hammer in Welch,

Minn., Aug. 10-13.

New stops on the schedule include the PBA50 Dick Weber Super Senior Classic presented by Storm (July 18-20) and the PBA50 Pro Bowl West Fort Wayne Classic presented by Ebonite (July 20-23) at Pro Bowl West in Fort Wayne, Ind.  Only players 60 years of age and older will be eligible to enter the super senior event.

The other new venue on the schedule will be Cave Man Bowl in Grants Pass, Ore., which will host the PBA50 Grants Pass Open presented by Track, June 20-23.

The Senior U.S. Open will be held June 1-6 at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, to be followed by the Senior Masters at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center, June 8-13.

The 2014 PBA50 Tour season will see a new crop of top-level players from the PBA

Bob Johnson

Bob Johnson has received more national writing awards than any other bowling writer — close to 70 over the course of his 40-year career. He began at age 16 as a staff writer and then assistant editor for the weekly Pacific Bowler newspaper in his native California, and within three years was writing feature stories for Bowlers Journal. He has written for the magazine ever since, except for a five-year span when he was hired as the founding editor of another magazine. He moved to Chicago in 2000 and spent 13 years in the Windy City, including five as Bowlers Journal’s Editor. In 1975, Johnson received the Robert E. Kennedy Award as California’s top undergraduate high school journalist. Five years earlier, on the lanes, he had shared the Bantam Division Doubles championship in the Orange County Junior Bowling Association Championships. Today, he continues to work full-time for Bowlers Journal as its Senior Editor, to write his popular “Strikes Me” column, and to edit Luby Publishing Inc.’s weekly business-to-business Cyber Report.
