This did not seem to deter this distaff field from psoting some great scores and the field was handsomely led by Germany's Nadine Geisler, 23, from Kaiserslautern, maybe better known as K-Town to the thousands of american serviceman who served on the bases in the area.

Geisler, new to the German national team, but already a star after finishing eleventh in the recent Vienna Open which was dominated by American PBA players, hit a 221.50 average on this testing condition to post 1772 to lead the field in the first of three blocks before the cut to the top eight on Friday evening.

Coach and WBW Hall of Famer Martina Beckel was overjoyed at her rookie's opening performance. "Geisler is tall and strong and will definitely be a great asset to the German national team," she said.

A great revoery came from defending champion Kirsten Penny from England. Way off the mark with opening games of 168 and 127 she made a quick line change to come back with six good games, including a 280, to place second to Geisler on 1683.

The girls will bowl their second eight-game block on the long oil pattern tomorrow morning, but now the men take over the 24 Roll House lanes for their short oil stint.

Bob Johnson

Bob Johnson has received more national writing awards than any other bowling writer — close to 70 over the course of his 40-year career. He began at age 16 as a staff writer and then assistant editor for the weekly Pacific Bowler newspaper in his native California, and within three years was writing feature stories for Bowlers Journal. He has written for the magazine ever since, except for a five-year span when he was hired as the founding editor of another magazine. He moved to Chicago in 2000 and spent 13 years in the Windy City, including five as Bowlers Journal’s Editor. In 1975, Johnson received the Robert E. Kennedy Award as California’s top undergraduate high school journalist. Five years earlier, on the lanes, he had shared the Bantam Division Doubles championship in the Orange County Junior Bowling Association Championships. Today, he continues to work full-time for Bowlers Journal as its Senior Editor, to write his popular “Strikes Me” column, and to edit Luby Publishing Inc.’s weekly business-to-business Cyber Report.
