Trying for his second PBA50 Tour title, Mike Edwards of Tulsa, Okla., averaged 245 Tuesday to lead the first round of the PBA50 Dayton Classic presented by Roto Grip at Capri Lanes in Kettering, Ohio.

Edwards, who won the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters in his PBA50 Tour rookie season, finished the round with a 1,963 eight-game pinfall total bowling games of 270, 255, 215, 246, 194, 247, 278 and 258.

He holds an 18-pin lead over PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker of King, N.C., in second, finishing the round with a 1,941 pinfall.

“When I woke up this morning I wasn’t feeling well so I didn’t know that to expect today,” said Edwards, who also owns one PBA Tour title. “Sometimes you’re not feeling the best and you bowl real well and other times you’re feeling good and you don’t bowl well. It’s hard to figure sometimes.

“I only used two balls in the round which is rare for me and the conditions really fell into my hands,” he added. “My biggest adjustment was my foot speed and timing. We’re bowling on wood approaches here which, for me, are slicker than the synthetic approaches so it took a little getting used to.”

Edwards has best finishes of third and eighth this season, which came in the USBC Senior Masters and Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open, respectively.

Rounding out the top five were Tracy Teeters, Salem, Ore., 1,934; Kerry Painter, Henderson, Nev., 1,917, Jack Jurek, Lackawanna, N.Y. and Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., tied with 1,905.

Dayton Classic defending champion Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen of Orlando finished the round in seventh with 1,891.

The 89-player field returns Wednesday for another eight-game qualifying round which will determine the top 28 players who will advance to Thursday’s match play rounds. The top four players after match play will advance to the stepladder finals which are scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.
