The opening squad of the Bowltech Aalborg International at the famed Lovvang Bowling Center in northern Denmark on Monday night (May 24) looked very much to be an all-Danish affair for the 60 competitors.
But, wait a minute, what's that name we see down in 24th place? Well, just to spoil the 100 per cent Danish participation, American Ken Bland, now a resident in Norway, spoils the party.
Taking top spot after the opening six-game qualifier is the intrepid Kamilla Kjeldsen, the well-known Danish international who was World Bowling Writers (WBW) World Bowler of the Year just a few years back. Always a formidable opponent, she gave the men the run around by totaling 1445, including, of course, the women's eight points per game bonus.
Mik Stampe, also a frequent European Bowling Tour (EBT) competitor holds second place on 1378 and Stefan Jensen placed third with 1337.
An added bonus for Kjeldsen was that she was wearing an Ebonite shirt and also using an Ebonite ball so therefore won the Ebonite squad winners' prize of US$1,000. She also advances to Sunday's finals. Not bad for an evening's work.
Qualifying rounds on this unique condition of short oil on one of the pair of lanes and long oil on the other run through until the wee small hours of Saturday night, then the final rounds take place on Sunday.
