Belmonte Leads Field into Match Play in PBA Indianapolis Open

by Bill Vint, Professional Bowlers Association 0

INDIANAPOLIS – Australia’s Jason Belmonte has demonstrated time and again that once he figures out how to attack the lanes, other PBA players can rarely keep up. He did it again Thursday morning when he charged into the third-round lead in the Go Bowling! PBA Indianapolis Open.

Belmonte, the 35-year-old two-handed player and four-time PBA Player of the Year, rolled games of 265, 280, 258, 199, 247 and 238 on the mixed lane conditioning environment at Woodland Bowl to overtake second-round leader BJ Moore of Greensburg, Pa., by 67 pins. Belmonte finished the qualifying portion of the tournament with an 18-game total of 4,240 pins while Moore had 4,173 pins. Rounding out the top five as the top 24 qualifiers advanced to the start of round-robin match play Thursday evening were defending Indianapolis champion Jakob Butturff of Tempe, Ariz., 4,163; Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., 4,030, and Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, 4,026.

All rounds of the tournament are being contested on a challenging mixed lane conditioning system where the 45-foot Dick Weber oiling pattern is applied to the left lane and the 38-foot Mike Aulby oiling pattern is applied to the right lane.

The Indianapolis Open, a Tier 2 PBA Playoffs points event, continued with the first of three eight-game match play rounds Thursday at 6 p.m. Match play continues Friday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The top five players after 42 games will compete in Sunday’s stepladder finals, live on FS1, beginning at 3 p.m. EST.

All qualifying and match play rounds will be live-streamed by PBA’s online streaming partner, FloBowling. For subscription information, visit FloBowling.com.
