'JJ' HITS THE HIGHS
John Janawicz, 32, of Winter Haven, Florida, a township just a few miles from this Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, topped the field this evening with a 1919 eight-game series on the mixed pattern, Janawicz also clinched the high qualifying series with 5577 over the 24 games, a nice average of 232.38. Prizes of $1,000 for each achievement were presented by Asian Bowling Federation Honorary Life President Mrs. Vivien Fung of Hong Kong.
Like Diandra Asbaty of Indiana, the tournament leader in the ladies' division, Janawicz was the tournament host's selection to add to the 24 male and female bowlers from the three zones, Asian, American and European.
Janawicz, who has been an employee of Kegel for some seven years as a lane technician and tournament coordinator, made ABC Tournament history last year in Reno with an 858 series to win the singles and also clinched the all events title.
Has he spent the last few weeks practicing the various lane patterns? "No," he adamantly replied. "I didn't practice at all until the Malaysians arrived a couple of day's before the tournament.
"This is the first time that I have ever bowled on the mixed pattern we used today," he added. "To me, it was tough at first as I couldn't find a rhythm or a suitable wrist position. As the lanes opened up, I settled into an approach flow and felt more comfortable. I didn't look at any score-sheets during the series, so didn't realize that I was the tournament leader until the end. Now I will get ready to face Daniel Lim of Malaysia in the morning, but I won't make any decision as to whether I will start on short or long oil until I've rolled a few balls in the morning."
Although there was some tremendous bowling in the men's division Thursday evening, highlighted by a 299 in the 23rd game by Anders Ohman of Sweden, the 1919 series by Janawicz was eclipsed earlier when Diandra Asbaty hit 1994. In fact, the ladies seemed to fare much better on the varying conditions and it is not a great number of pins that separate the two sexes when the dust of battle had settled. If you like statistics, compare the two sets of figures.
The line-up for the men's semifinals on Friday afternoon:
Pasi Uotila, Finland vs Jouni Helminen, Finland
John Janawicz, United States vs Daniel Lim, Malaysia
Kimmo Lehton, Finland vs Anders Ohman, Sweden
Stuart Williams, England vs Arturo Hernandez, Venezuela
