30th THAILAND OPEN
BANGKOK
May 3 - 14, 2004
Ahmed
Shaheen of Doha, Qatar has emerged as top seed after the grueling 16 games of
the Masters' Division here at the BSC Bowl, Bangkok. The 33-year-old assistant
coach to the Qatar juniors took first place on 3,392, for him a lowly 212
average, outpointing Chester King of the Philippines by 22 pins. Fellow Qataran
Abdullah Algatan squeezed into third place, just one pin ahead of Adrian Ang of
Malaysia.
"These lanes are tough," said lithe Shaheen. "I had problems with my consistency
over the first eight-game block yesterday, so when I started with a 279
today I decided that I would try to be much more consistent. I did drop to a 163
in the twelfth game, but other than that my scores were good, so I'm very
pleased to be the top seed."

The ebullient Shalin Zulkifli, 26, (right) once again tops the ladies'
standings. Now back on form after successfully taking her university
examinations in sports psychology, she is able to devote all her time to her
favorite sport. Like Shaheen, she remarked upon how tough these lane conditions
have turned out to be. "I played seven times in the qualifying rounds before I
made it," she remarked, "and only got through with the last attempt."
The top six men and six women now advance to the stepladder finals.
