A spectacular display by an Egyptian dance troupe was the highlight of the opening ceremony of the inaugural Pharaohs Open Tournament at  the packed International Bowling Center in Cairo on Saturday evening. This illustrious event was sent on its way by being opened by Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports, H.E. Dr. Ali El-Din Helal, who also brought the welcome news that his ministry will sponsor the Egyptian Bowling Federation and institute a full coaching program with full supportive funding to further the growth of tenpin bowling throughout Egypt. Dr P.S. Nathan, president of the World Tenpin Bowling Association, welcomed the champions among the 32 nations represented in this year's competition and gave his best wishes for the continuance of such a spectacular event in years to come. Tournament organizer Amr Kamel, managing director of Aida Leisure Equipment, thanked everybody for the universal support and promised a memorable tournament for participants and spectators alike.

The initial squad took to the lanes and the early pacemaker was Mexico' Roberto Silva with a score of 1410 over the six qualifying games, hitting a high game of 263. In the ladies' division, Seng Fu Feng of Chinese Taipei, winner of the AMF Bowling World Cup at this center in 1997, heads the distaff field with 1339, her high game is 238.

Over 200 competitors will bowl the six qualifying games before the first round proper, composed of the top 36 men, plus four local bowlers. The ladies' division will consist of the leading 22, also plus four local players.

A spectacular stepladder finale for all divisions takes place on September 2.
