LADIES - ROUND 3 - TOP 18:
Top 8 qualify for round robin matchplay.
With just 220 points between first and 18th
place, this round is nail-biting. Only eight
places are available for the next round, the
round robin, from which four will proceed to
the stepladder final and that octet currently
contains two past champions, the defending
champion Brenda Pratt from Burton-on-Trent,
England and Malta's Doris Camilleri. Double
champion Farida Pascoal-Blom of the
Netherlands lay a little back in tenth.
Going into the four-game set, Sweden's
Sonja Ostlund held pole position with a 19-pin
buffer over Catherine Roux of France but with
fast bowling of just one person per lane
things were rapidly a'changing.
After
the final balls of the squad had been rolled
it turned out to the unique situation of seven
nations in the final octet, two Swedes, one
French, one Italian, one American, one
Belgian, one English and one Maltese.
Whilst Sonja Ostlund of Sweden dropped from
first place to fourth, it was Catherine Roux
(pictured) who dominated the squad to take
over pole position and Hildegard Kuhn of Italy
slipped into second.
Just fifty per cent of accrued pinfall is
now carried forward to the round robin.
The top 18 men open the program on Sunday
morning at 09:00 and both the men's and
women's round robins will commence at noon.
The top four men and four women will
contest the stepladder finals from 16:00.
