ROUND 2 - THE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL

Saturday morning's opening squad featured male qualifiers in positions 37-72. Each player rolled four games, so they had to be pretty good to propel themselves up into the higher group and maybe, just maybe, a chance to get in the prize money positions which embrace the top 24.

English players top the three positions on the leader board after 16 games, Mo Singleton (3268) (pictured, center); Steve Wright (3224) and Keith Hodge (3193) (left). All have chances of moving up to the next round as they are averaging higher than those at the foot of the 1-36 group. It all rests on how those perform.

The next group on the lanes will be those elite members of the 1-36 and all eyes will be focused on defending champion Torbjorn Halling of Sweden, going for his third consecutive and fourth title. Currently in third place, Torbjorn is 148 points behind tournament leader Christer Danielsson, also from Sweden, and with John Bosch of Holland in second place, just 41 points ahead of Halling.

Halling and Roger 'Rupert' Pieters of Belgium are now the only past champions left in the men's field.

ROUND 2 - THE TOP 36 MEN

Christer Danielsson of Sweden maintained his pole position with 891 in this block and now has a 231.00 average over his 16 games to date. But the bowler of the day is Ron Oldfield from Sheffield, England who has now shot up into second place after a superb four game series of 919 in this squad.

Danielsson said, "I didn't start off very well today but bowled much better over the second two games. I suppose I should be happy with 891 after that."

Past champions Torbjorn Halling and Roger Pieters are still in contention, seventh and twentieth respectively.

Magner Dyrnes of Norway is the lucky guy who just made the 36th place cut at 3186, a 199 average.

The 36 qualifiers return to the lanes at 16:30 local time for a further four games and then a cut to 18.

In the meantime, the 36 lady qualifiers will be playing four games for their cut to 18.
