FINALS:
The first
ever Globalair Travel Maltata Youth Open was concluded on Saturday at the Eden
SuperBowl, St. Julians, producing one of the most gripping final matches ever
witnessed on the local tenpin Bowling scene. The thrills and suspense were all
worthwhile however, as the event produced Maltatese champions in both the U-18
and U24 events, namely Mauro Anastasi and Mark Muscat respectively, and Anastasi
then went on to win the title of overall Champion by beating Muscat in the
Challenge Cup.
The day
started with the Masters event whereby the top 6 from each category (U-16, U-18,
U-21, U24) bowled a five-game round robin, decided on match points (2 for a win,
1 for a draw). Mauro blew away the competition to win the U-18section with five
straight wins, and a fantastic total of 1103 pins (220 average). His five-game
set featured four 200+ games, including an excellent 236 in game two, and an
even better 257 in game five. Second was Jimmy Ravez (Belgium), and third Dave
Thompson (England).
Muscat
snatched the U-24 masters from fellow Maltese Neil Sullivan in the final game of
the round robin. The two were tied on eight match points but Muscat was better
over the set by just eight pins to put Sullivan in the number two spot. Third in
the U-24’s was Pam Demanuele (Malta).
The Under-21
masters was taken by Darren Uren (England), followed by Philippe Vancell (Malta)
and Matthew Caruana (Malta) in second an third respectively.
Under-16
results : 1st Craig Lambkin (England), 2nd Justin Caruana Scicluna (Malta), 3rd
Alex Thistleton (England).
Anastasi
faced U-16 winner Lambkin in the best-of-three U-18 final. Game one was tied on
188 - 188, but then the English junior took game two, 202 – 213, to pile on the
pressure for Anastasi. Mauro pulled out all the stops in the emotionally charged
third game, winning 223 - 189 to level the game tally, but clinch the title due
to his superior scratch pinfall.
Muscat played
against Darren Uren in the U-24 final, and took the opener by the narrowest of
margins, 176 - 175. The second was also close, but Muscat just managed to pull
it of with a 198 - 193 win to take the U-24 Championship crown.
Muscat and
Anastasi then went head to head in the Challenge Cup to decide the overall
champion - again best of three. It was Anastasi all the way - he took the match
in two straight games, 162 - 207; 132 – 239, making him the first ever Globalair
Travel Maltata Youth Open Champion, a very much deserved title indeed.
Presentation
of trophies and awards was held after the finals, presented by Neil Dent
(Tournament Director, General Manager Eden SuperBowl), in the presence of Mr.
Charlo Bonnici - representing the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Mark Bugeja
- Globalair Travel, Mr. Giancarlo Tolu, Junior coach.
