SMITS THE MAN
Peter
Smits, the 20-year-old bowler from s'Hertegenbosch in the Netherands (pictured),
hit yet another high game of 279 to open Round Three and left the field trailing
in his wake as he completed the four-game series 191 pins ahead of his nearest
rival, Leonard Lowenhamn of Sweden. His comfortable 930 series in this round
brought his tournament average so far, now 20 games, to 225 even.
"He lives and bowls in a world of his own," commented Peter Knopp of Germany, a
contender fighting to get into the top eight for the round robin and some 20
pins as a target for make-up.
Jason Belmonte, the talented bowler from 'down-Under', believed to be the first
Australian ever to enter the Malta Open, is still thrilling the crowd with his
unique two-handed delivery. This dates back to the time when he first went
bowling as a little child and could only roll the ball by using two hands. The
style has stuck with him as he feels there is no need to change. It has
certainly been good enough to see him on the international stage as a member of
the Australian national team.
The remaining players now play a further four games for the cut to the
eight-player round robin.
