Like Smits in the men's division, Christel Carlsson of Sweden kept pole position through round two of the ladies' division, 34 pins ahead of fellow countrywoman Ellinor Heneskar, the early tournament leader. Keeping the Swedish tradition of the top three places.
Carlsson 47, of Gothenburg, Sweden (pictured) was a member of the silver medal winning Swedish team in the World Championships last year in Malaysia. She has bowled in the Malta Open more times than she can remember, with a high finish of fourth place. "I always take a ten day vacation when I come to Malta," she said, "and then enjoy day trips around this fantastic island."
Brenda de Bruine of the Netherlands topped the Round Two scores with a creditable 903, which brought her up into fifth place from 17th.
Local favorite Sue Abela, double Malta Open titlist, is having to fight back from eleventh in the next round, 150 pins off the pace.
Bowlers from nine different nations are still represented in the hunt for the title and this group of 18 will set the balls rolling in the next round at 11:00am Sunday morning.
