FRIDAY, JUNE 16
SQUAD 'L'

The final squad of the penultimate day of qualifying saw plenty of action, despite running way past midnight.
A stubborn 10-pin robbed Serge Frouvelle, 46, of Toulouse, France (pictured) of his 18th career perfect game, his 299 now being the second highest game of this year's tournament. Incidentally, this was his fifth consecutive 299. He did have the consolation of being the squad leader and slots into eighth place overall with 1349.
Visiting Malta for the Open for the second time, Frouvelle, a company director, has fallen in love with Malta and combines the tournament with a vacation, along with his wife Laurence Gaillard, who is currently in 12th position in the ladies' division.
Laurels go to Sweden's Rebecka Larsen of Sweden, sister of the mighty Martin of Pergamon fame. Rebecka's six-game total of 1356 now leads the tournament by one pin over Maltese star Sue Abela.
Two more full qualifying squads bowl on Saturday, then the fields cut to 48 men and 36 women for Round Two on Saturday evening.
The finals will run through Sunday and are scheduled to be completed around 16:30, a couple of hours before the usual party.
