Wednesday, June 14:
A brief but v ery
enjoyable opening ceremony, emceed by genial
SuperBowl general manager Neil Dent, set the
15th Malta Open on course for yet another
successful event for the participants from 22
nations.
Neil Dent welcomed competitors, past and
new, wishing all much success with the new
re-entry format being introduced this year.
Visiting
Malta for the first time, European Tenpin
Bowling Federation (ETBF) vice-president Kim
Thorsgaard Jensen, the power behind the
amazing success of the European Bowling Tour,
expressed his pleasure to be invited to this
fantastic island and then astounded the
assembled gathering by bowling a strike with
the opening ball, only the second time that
had been achieved in the 15-year history of
the tournament.

SQUAD C - 17:00

An English double top the respective ladies' and
men's standings after the initial squad Wednesday
evening as Zara Glover of Preston and
Peterborough's Mark Wells set the pace. Wells,
the only player to go over 1300, has a 12-pin
buffer over Mikael Kanold of Sweden, the bowler
who took the €1,000 bonus as top qualifier at the
Brunswick Aalborg International in Denmark a
couple of weeks ago. Glover clinched pole
position in the ladies' standings by the slim
margin of just one pin over Sweden's Jenny Hoglund.
Melissa Anastasi, who took the Malta Open title in
1992, currently lies in third place. Matthew
Giles, also from England, has the current high
game of 278. There are no entries or re-entries
for Squad D, so action resumes at 09:00 on
Thursday morning.
