IT'S BELGIUM vs ENGLAND FOR TOP HONORS
The ding-dong battle between Belgium's Chris van Damme and Paul Moor of
England, the latter the defending champion,
continued
with the opening squad on Sunday morning. Overnight, Moor had just the slim
seven pins over the lanky Belgian but lost that after two of the four game stint
and had to be content with second place as the 18-man field was cut to just
eight for the round robin.
Come the end of the 24th game and the wiping of lots of sweaty brows, Van Damme
held pole position over a five nation field for the next round, settling for a
30-pin advantage over Moor to carry through to the round robin.
"For the moment I'm enjoying the joust with Paul, it's so good to be able to
keep up with him," said Van Damme. "I can do this once, he does it all the
time."
Van Damme was runner-up three years ago, but has his sights set on the top place
on the podium this year.
"I got off to a bad start again," commented Moor. "I was fishing for a line as
the lanes seemed to be tighter today. It is also a lot warmer in the center than
it has been over the past few days and that is making the lanes change a lot
quicker."
All 18 players today figure in the prize money and, as mentioned, the top eight
progress to the round robin. England's Stuart Williams was the unfortunate
victim of the cut, missing out on eighth place by 23 pins.
