JUST SO NEARLY PERFECT
A
stubborn 10-pin with the final ball of the
third game robbed Helen Johnsson of Sweden
of her fourth perfect game and the Eden
Superbowl of its first ladies' 300.
Johnsson's final delivery, in front of a
packed but silent concourse, looked to be a
solid pocket hit but a ringing pin stood in
the corner, much to the disappointment of
the slim Swede and the crown of onlookers.
"I just bowled that last ball too fast," she
disappointingly explained after the squad.
But that 299 is the tournament's high game,
men or women to date, and is the highest
ladies' game ever at the Eden Superbowl.
Johnsson now has a massive 263 pin buffer
over second placed Lisa Gardner of England
as the group move into the round robin stage
for the top eight, and is rolling what must
be one of the highest ladies' averages ever
in the Malta Open, a 214.60.
Of the eight contestants advancing to the
next stage there are seven nations
represented, the English the only country to
have two competitors at this level, Lisa
Gardner and Ann Smith.
Both the men and women will contest the
round robin alongside each other, then the
top four in each division will play the
stepladder finals.
