12 GAMES QUALIFYING - LADIES:

 Farida Pascoal-Blom of Oosterhout, Holland took over pole position after Squad E tonight and had two pleasant surprises. The first came when she was told that she was the new tournament leader, as she hadn't known her scores topped the pile. The second was that whilst the squad was bowling she became a grandmother for the second time. "I spoke to my daughter this morning and she didn't tell me that the baby girl was likely to arrive today," she exclaimed.
The Dutch two-time Malta Senior Open champion dislodged previous leader Sonja Ostlund of Sweden by 47 points and had to wait for the final D Squad to bowl to see if she holds pole position going into round two.
"I lead the qualifying rounds last year," she commented. "Then I bowled badly in the round robin and missed the stepladder by one place. I changed my equipment over the last six games today and that worked well, so I hope to finish in a much better position this year, perhaps take my third title."
