FINAL QUALIFYING STANDINGS:
MARCH 23.
Shocks a'plenty as the final field of 36 men
and 36 women unfolded as the qualifying rounds
of this excellent 28th Malaysian Open concluded
on the vibrant lanes of the Sunway Pyramid
Megalanes Wednesday night, or should we say the
wee small hours of Thursday morning.
On one of the last squads, Malaysia's Adrian
Ang hit a perfect game to total 1046 and take
over the lead of the Local Pool, despite severe
pain from a sore foot, derived from dropping a
bowling ball on it in Kuwait last week. Ang
pipped fellow national team-mate Zulmazran
Zulkifli by 42 pins to take over the leader
board.
The ubiquitous Dino Castillo from Texas, USA
captured pole position in the Overseas Pool
with just the third score over 1,000, a 1002.
This ten-nation field includes Kuwait Open
champion Jason Belmonte (972), the World Bowling
Writers' 2004 Bowler of the Year and the man who
has that unique two-handed delivery. Also in the
talented group is Martin Blixt of Sweden (964),
a rampaging viking making his debut in this
popular international event.
That dreaded Desperado Squad, once again
finishing just prior to the cocks crowing at
dawn, saw the veteran Teemu Raatikainen of
Finland, now at the ripe old age of 45, making
his way through to the Masters with a fine 264
after struggling with the lanes in his earlier
qualifying attempts. The stocky Finn is just
starting a six-month vacation from his work as a
Helsinki swimming pool worker to hit the
international tournament circuit.
Seeded through to the Men's Masters is
defending champion Daniel Lim of Malaysia.
In the Ladies' Masters, defending champion
with a free ride to the final rounds in another
Malaysia, the incredible Shalin Zulkifli, a name
revered among international keglers. Zulkifli's
main contenders are Christyn Chew of Malaysia
from the Local Pool, in pole position on 923,
and Singaporean Amanda Ng, top of the Overseas
Pool with 894. Five nations are represented in
this pool and one of the favorites has to be
Diandra Asbaty (pictured) of the United States,
who qualified with 873.
