UNITED ARAB EMIRATES AT THE TOP

Sultan Abdullah Al-Marzouqi, 38, a licensing officer by profession (pictured), rules the roost after the first eight-games of the Men's Open Masters this evening, setting a series of 1,755 to take pole position. A frequent competitor in the Malaysian Open over the years, the burly Arab rolls quite a simple game and only uses one strike ball and one spare ball. "The lane conditions were exactly the same as they were during the past few days, so I was able to adapt quickly and score well," he said. "I very much enjoyed my visit to KL for the World Championships last year and am pleased to be back here for the Open."
Local bowler Daniel Lim is just 17 pins off the pace and has Azidi Ameran for company a couple of places lower. Norway's Kim Haugen, 2001 AMF World Cup champion, set off to take the early lead with 258 and 233 but, like so many others, fell away in the final stages.
The men return to the lanes Friday morning for the final eight games, then the top six will contest the stepladder final.
