STOP PRESS!
C.J. Suarez of the Philippines (pictured), the 2003 AMF
Bowling World Cup champion, bowled a 300 in his second game of the 12:00 squad
at the Pyramid Megalanes today.
This was the initial entry in this year's Open for the 25-year-old
Filipino from Quezon City, who was pronounced 'Athlete of the Year'
after his outstanding World Cup win in the Honduras last year. He
was pleased to hit his second perfect game this year and his fourth
career 300. "I get close time after time, but don't seem to be able
to hit 300 very often," he wryly commented. "The lanes here are
tough and I'm finding the breakdown hard to read," he added.
His prize for this first perfect game in this year's Open is a Canon XL
1s Digital Camcorder, valued at RM19,500 (nearly $5,000), which will be
presented by co-sponsor Canon.
CJ's total score won't make the record books, though. His set was:
167-300-166-192 for a total of 825, way off the pace.
QATAR REGAIN POLE POSITION
The squad from Qatar certainly seem to be determined
to dominate this 27th Malaysian Open, now holding three of the top four
positions on the leader board.
On last night's final squad, the remaining spectators were treated to a
true strikefest as Abdulla Al-Qattan (pictured) and 1999 AMF Bowling
World Cup champion Ahmed Shaheen sandwiched previous pacesetter Biboy
Rivera of the Philippines at the top of the board.
Al-Qattan posted 998 and Shaheen 986 and the scores now creep ever
nearer the 1,000 barrier as this prestigious event moves into the final
day of qualifying.
Earlier Tuesday evening Filipino Rivera had set the lanes alight with 995
and that score looked good to hold overnight. However, Al-Qattan spoiled
that elation and early 25th birthday present for Rivero with his
four-games of 224, 238, 288 and 245.
After tonight's final qualifying squad, the leading positions have been
confirmed and the only change came in the mixed pool where Salem
Bosherba of Qatar hit 900 to qualify for Thursday's first round of the
Masters, joined by the top five players from the Desperado squad:
1. KHALED EMADI, QATAR (274)
2. AHMED MUHARA, QATAR (235)
3. KIM HAUGEN, NORWAY (233)
4. AHMAD MURAD, U.A.E. (212)
5. ANDREW LEE, SINGAPORE (207) |
