Thursday -
At the end of the first day which featured many international stars, Anders Ohman of Sweden, newly elected to the WBW International Bowling Hall of Fame,  sits on the top perch with the only score to exceed 1400, a grand 1452, and is 71 pins ahead of defending champion Britt Brondsted of Denmark.

Scandinavians now occupy the top six places, their stranglehold only broken by Achim Grabowski of Germany, now down to seventh place.

Friday - A city-wide power outage played havoc with Friday's opening squad, delaying play for just over twenty minutes, but it didn't deter Finland's Teemu Raatikainen, 45, from topping the squad. The Helsinki sports' employee hit 1333 over today's six games and currently holds fourth place in the qualifying standings. Ohman still rules the roost.

Squad 2: For a while it looked as though Finland's Lasse Lintila would sneak into first place, but a low final game brought him back down to a disappointing twelfth spot. Once again, Britt Brondsted, the defending champion, consistently hit the pocket  and has now brought her total score up to 1427, but still holds second place behind Anders Ohman.

STOP PRESS: Martin Larsen of Sweden bowled the first 300 game of the 2005 BEC in the second game of the 17:00 squad. The slim Swede then went on to hit a 279 to amass 774 over his first three games. 728 over his final set brought him to the top of the leader board with the first series to exceed 1500, that by two pins for 1502, and deposing fellow countryman Anders Ohman into second place.
Those scores withstood the challenges from the final squad, which finished in the wee small hours.
Four more squads hit the Strike Bowl lanes today, Saturday, then the top 48 will qualify for the next stage. That illustrious group will be joined by six players from the notorious Desperado squad, a one-game on one lane shoot-out as a 'last chance saloon'.

Saturday - No changes in the top places of the leader board after the first of the four squads on Saturday. The total individual entry has now passed the 300-mark and the cut to 48th place has now risen to 1271. Once again, the top places are dominated by Scandinavian players but Kai Gunther of Germany has snuck into fifth.
The top home player, Alexandros Tzoynis, is still well in contention, currently holding seventh position.
There are bowlers from 16 of the 27 competing nations within the top 48 places.

Focus in the second squad today was on Jon Zadel of Bournemouth, England. The 25-year-old pro shop assistant hit the second highest game of the tournament, a 290, starting with a spare and then eleven straight strikes. His 1393 series brought him up to fourth place with two squads still to bowl.

Michael Kramer of Germany hit the best score of the penultimate squad, bowling 1382 for a current fifth place. Tony Smith made it a German double with 1348, then Finnish star Jouni Helminen came third on the squad and 17th overall. High game on this squad came from Jens Nickel, also from Germany, with a 278.

The final squad turned out to be a marathon, coming off the lanes after 3:00 am. Two Australians, Jason Belmonte and Andrew Frawley tied for the final place to make the cut on 1298. Fortunately for the top echelon, they were able to sleep whilst the remaining flock fought for a position in the finals. Pity then the brave 65 who stayed on for the infamous Desperado squad. Their one-game on one lane battle saw a tie for sixth place between three players, so forcing a roll-off which saw Oliver Blase of Germany book a place in the finals. Now the clock struck four and it was a very weary bunch that wended its way back to the respective hotels, some to have a quick shower and breakfast before returning to Strike Bowl for the 9:00 am squad for the top 54 players.
