LADIES' TOP EIGHT:
Best-of-three games matches
Saturday, September 4, 09:00
Highest seeds has the
choice of short or long oil pattern in the
opening game. They then switch in the second
game.
Petty comfortably defeated Fotinia, 2 -
0, opening with a solid game of 236 to take
first blood.
Saldjian seemed to have control over Oien but
the match went to three games as Oien took the
second game by just one pin, 188-187. A 232 form
the Norwegian saw her book her semifinal place.
The pendulum swung back and forth in the
Manico-Ferina encounter and in the third game
the Swiss girl just had to mark in the tenth
frame to take the match. Her first ball left the
4-7-10 split and it is Ferina who has the
semifinal place.
Action now switches to the men's first round.
Then both the men's and ladies' semifinals will
take to the lanes.
The finals will see the ladies first in action.

SEMIFINALS:
PETTY IS STILL NUMBER ONE
Tanya Petty of Germany coasted through to the final, winning the quarter and
semifinals in just two games each, coolly and calmly taking out Christina
Fotinia of Greece first and then destroying Norwegian's hope Ingunn Oien in the
semi's.
Petty will face Italian Roberta Ferina, who took three games to defeat Bigi
Manico of Switzerland in the first match and went the full distance again
against Krista Pollanen of Finland to book a place in the final.
The onward march of Righi Domenico of San Marino continues as he surprisingly
had an easy victory over the burly Dimitrios Karetsos of Greece in the
semifinals after destroying top seed Olli Tiainen's hopes in the first match.
The Ives van Eyken of Belgium versus home favorite Habib Dogan was a
roller-coaster ride of peaks and valleys as the Belgian took the first game by
61 pins, but the gritty Turk came back to level the match with a 67 pin second
game margin. The huge crowd of home supporters willed Dogan to victory and a
place in the final but the Belgian had other ideas about that and came out the
victor.

FINAL:
PETTY DOES IT AGAIN
A gold medal in the ECI in Scheidam, Holland
in 2002; silver in Vienna, Austria last year,
and now gold again in Ankara, Turkey.
Tanya Petty of Heidelberg, Germany, currently
living and working in Vienna, Austria, but soon
moving back to her home town, won the hearts of
all on the packed concourse and the gold medal
too. And she did it in style, taking the wins in
all three of today's matches in two games.
"I adopted a two-stop strategy, just like
Formula One's Michael Schumacher," Petty said,
laughingly, after the final. "I enjoyed all the
matches and wasn't worried about what they had
done before. I opted to start each match on the
short oil and won them all. I must say that the
lanes were great and I used the same ball all
day. I also stayed on the same line."
So, her first visit to Ankara has been a
rewarding experience. "Like all the competitors,
I am very surprised at the high level of
expertise at this tournament. It is way beyond
my expectations. The organizers and people here
are so nice and they want to do anything they
can to help. The organization is just perfect."
