MEN'S QUALIFYING, FOURTH 6 OF 24 GAMES,
LONG OIL:
Friday, Sept. 3 - 13:00
FIGHT TO THE FINNISH
Olli
Tiainen of Finland (pictured) easily retained
his pole position through the final six games of
the qualifying to take top seed. The 47-year-old
bowling center proprietor and Finnish national
team coach from Riihimaki ended the stint with
six solid 200-plus games with a high of 237 and
207 low.
"I don't mind who I come up against in the
final," Tiainen said. "The most important thing
is to win myself. I didn't worry about the
position I would finish in tod ay,
I just wanted to bowl well."
Tiainen leads the final octet into Saturday's
best-of-three game finals and as top seed will
play against San Marino's Righi Domenico, then
second-placed Ives van Eyken of Belgium will
face Sweden's Mikael Ahlberg. The third match is
Remco Verboon of the Netherlands versus early
tournament leader Dimitrios Karetsos of Greece
and the four matches will be rounded up with
Turkey's own Habib Dogan versus Moshe Sheinman
of Israel.
Kiril Kirilov of Bulgaria (pictured, right) had
a grand surprise for everyone in the fifth game
this afternoon. Having held the bottom spot for
a considerable time, he suddenly lifted into
35th place by bowling the high game of the
tournament to date, a 289. That was the only
time he scored 200 or over in his entire 24
games.
