The highlight of play so far on this bright and sunny Sunday was, of course,
the brilliant perfect game by Sweden's Martin Blixt, finishing off his second
round of the day with a victory over past national team member Par Svensson,
three games to two in the best-of-five series. This was the first perfecto this
year for a man, the only other was rolled by Linda Haglund on Friday.
But there were a lot of interesting and close-fought matches during the
morning's play, along with the usual bunch of surprises. Young Magnus Zachrisson,
also from Sweden, was in focus for a while as he was the last survivor of the
Desperado squad, qualifying eventually in 43rd place and beaten in round
four by Svein Roger Olson of Norway, 3-1.
Three matches in the first round of the day, and the third of the
best-of-five finals, went the full distance, but four matches were quickly
decided over three games. Plenty of high games were posted on the scoreboards,
the highest being a 278 from Soren Aahman of Denmark until Blixt took to the
lanes and hit his 300.
Without criticizing the talents of England's Stuart Williams, it came as a
surprise that he took out American David Haynes in just three games. He now
advances to play Peder Jacobsson of Sweden in the next round, the stint that
features the top eight qualifiers taking on the remaining field.
It was an unfortunate draw that put Swedish team members Anders (Linus) Ohman
and Martin Larsen against one another. This, too, went the distance and saw a
high-scoring confrontation eventually go to Larsen, 3-2.
There's an air of high-pitched excitement within the luxurious Lovvang
Bowling Center this afternoon as the top seeds display their extraordinary
talents and muster for the honor of top place on the podium after the grueling
semi finals and final on TV.
