Mai
Ginge Jensen from Denmark (pictured) has the distinction of
bowling the Malta Open's first-ever women's
perfect game, slotting in those 12 great strikes
in the opening game of this squad this evening.
The multi-medalist from last year's ETBF
European Women's Championships, taking gold in
doubles with sister Anje, silver in trios and
bronze hails from Hjorring in Denmark and is a
regular competitor on the European Bowling Tour
(EBT) and is currently tenth in the EBT ladies'
rankings. A good finish here in Malta will see
her climb a couple of spots.
Danish team-mate Kamilla Kjeldsen also set off
on the 300 trail but fell at the final hurdle
with a nine-spare in the ninth frame of the
fifth game, then had a double and nine for a
278.
At
the same time, over on 13-14, Cypriot Andreas
Karystianos (pictured, left) looked well set to
perform the second perfect in the men's division
but had a six-count and strike in the tenth
frame for a 276. Hot stuff all over the center!
He had the consolation, though, of being the
squad leader with his six-game score of 1388, 17
pins ahead of England's Lee Chatfield.
Andreas comes from Limassol in Cyprus and this
is the first time he has bowled outside his
beautiful island. "I am very surprised to have
done so well and am not too disappointed at
missing out on that perfect game, I do have one
to my credit," the 22-year-old said.
It was a rare tussle indeed in the ladies' set
with superb bowling in addition to that
fantastic perfect game by Mai Ginge Jensen.
Ebullient Dane Kamilla Kjeldsen topped the lot
with an outstanding 1438 but was chased all the
way by Ghislaine van der Tol from the
Netherlands, who docked the session with 1404.
Mai suffered a couple of 170 games and fell to
fourth place and has to work on beating her 1337
in the next session.
Second bite
The final squad to complete all twelve
qualifying games and lots endeavouring to make
that magic 72nd place to continue in the
competition.
Some great scoring this morning with several 300
wannabees failing to clear the final hurdles,
among them Menno van den Heuvel from the
Netherlands who left the 10-pin with the first
ball of the tenth frame to clinch a 279.
After
ten of the twelve games, Mathieu Berges
(pictured with Kamilla Kjeldsen) from
Switzerland led this squad on a 228.90 average
but was being chased all the way by Menno,
hitting 224.60. But Mathieu maintained his edge
over the field to emerge the squad leader,
albeit by the narrow margin of three pins over
Lee Miller of England.
This was Mathieu's first visit to Malta and, of
course, his first entry into the Malta Open. The
21-year-old bowling center technician from
Lausanne is impressed: "I like it here very much
and am enjoying the bowling, nightlife and sun,"
he said.
Kamilla 'look, I am bending
my left knee' Kjeldsen, soon moving from
Aalborg to Aarhus, continued on her merry way
with 762 over her first three games of this
second block and looked set to take over as
number one in the ladies' division when the heat
of battle temporarily subsides. She was shooting
a 243.60 average after ten games and outpointing
all the men.
However, Dutchwoman Ghislaine van der Tol had
other ideas and hit 258 in her eleventh game to
Kamilla's 180. 224-206 again in the final game
brought her up to just ten pins behind the Dane.
