Morten Levandovski of Denmark
(pictured) thrilled the
packed concourse and fellow competitors with the 2007 Malta Open's
first 300 in his fifth game of 'D' squad
Thursday evening, the ninth perfect game of his
illustrious career.
Several players in this first six-game
qualifying block for 'D' squad had run strings of strikes, but all had blown their
chances in the latter stages of their games, but Morten
confidently ran out with twelve strikes.
This brought the Dane from Kolding up into first
place on the squad le ader board after five
games, 44 pins ahead of Stuart Williams of
England.
A lowly 225 in his final game still kept Morten
in first place overnight and Stuart Williams
held second place.
In the ladies' division, Elenor Heneskar of
Sweden (pictured) had a fantastic 228 average to
set a great target. From close to Stockholm,
Elenor is enjoying her second Malta experience,
having played here three years ago. "I can't
remember where I finished in 2004," she said,
with a wide smile. "There was plenty of room for
me with the strike pocket tonight," she added.
"The first two games I played on the same line,
but then I had to move quite a lot."
Elenor topped the table from 2005 Malta Open
champion Martina Beckel, the German 42 pins
aback. Malta's Sue Abela, double MO champion, is
currently fourth but, of course, bidding for her
third title.
The 'D' squad bowlers return to the Eden
SuperBowl lanes at 08:00 Friday for their second
six-game block.
SQUAD 'D' - SECOND BLOCK
Stuart
Williams of England, the recent WTBA World
Ranking Masters' champion (pictured), set a hot
pace to finish top of Squad 'D' and lies in a
second place tie in the overall standings, along
with Malta's Raymond Falzon Reale, on 2837.
Englishman Mark Wells, who married Helene on the
island last Monday, still holds first place with
2852 (See
Overall Standings
page).
Sweden's Elenor Heneskar (pictured above) kept
her momentum going well this morning and is the
current leader of the distaff group with 2594
and also tying for the high game on 267.
These lanes are very consistent, so there was
very little difference this morning to the
condition we played on last night," commented
burly Stuart Williams. "This is a very high
scoring bowling center and I had to make very
few changes over the twelve games."
This was just the second Malta Open experience
for Stuart - "I think I finished ninth or tenth
back in 2005," he said. "This is the type of
format that the bowlers want to play, especially
with pinfall being carried forward through all
the stages up to the end of the round robin. The
re-entry formats being used on most of the
European Tour events make it a lottery when you
get to the best of three game rounds and it is
rather boring for the spectators."
