| The
20-lane, AMF-equipped Eden SuperBowl, located in
St. Julians, the vibrant entertainment capital
of the idyllic central Mediterranean island of
Malta, was opened by Eden Leisure way back in
1988, so will celebrate its twentieth year in
2008. The center has the unique
position of being able to cater for all types of
bowling, from large international tournaments to
leagues, fun events, parties and normal open
play. During the summer this is a popular venue
for the thousands of language students who
also delight in the Eden Leisure attractions of a
17-screen cinema, fitness center and local FM
radio station. The company also operate the
Malta InterContinental Hotel, situated just
across the street from the SuperBowl.
As mentioned on our home page, this year the
Malta Open has reverted to the 12-game qualifier
instead of the re-entry qualification format
tested last year and at the time of writing we
have 192 competitors from 20 nations in two
divisions, men and women. There are
approximately 46 ladies on the lanes this year.
Competitors this year come from Austria,
Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, England,
Germany, Latvia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy,
Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Malta, Norway, Russia,
Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United
States.
The Malta Open, now in its 16th year, has the
world-wide reputation of being one of the
friendliest events on the tournament calendar,
mainly due to the TLC of Eden SuperBowl general
manager Neil Dent and his truly capable staff.
That's why so many of the competitors come back
year after year, but newcomers get just as much
of a friendly greeting.
Pictured, left to right, MIke Gatt, Neil Dent
and Charmaine Aquilina, all very well known and
revered by competitors and spectators alike.
Dominic Gall (pictured), the dynamic webmaster
of
www.talktenpin.co.uk, now one of Europe's
top tenpin
websites,
was the 'guest of honor' to roll the first ball
at the short opening ceremony before the initial
squad took to the lanes on Wednesday evening. We
shall quickly gloss over the fact that he only
scored three pins with his first ball but he
made up for that by sparing the frame with his
second shot.
Neil Dent welcomed the bowlers to this 16th
edition of the Malta Open and thanked sponsors
Eden Leisure for their continued support and
also the many players returning to the
tournament so many times.
The first squad took to the lanes promptly at
18:00, local time, and we hope to post the first
scores at approx. 22:00.
