SESSION 4 - Sunday 1:00pm
Quarterfinal Match 2:
It seem s
such a shame that the opening match in this
second o f
the quarterfinals will feature two English
players, left-handed Paul Moor (pictured, left)
and rightie Dominic Barrett (right), but with
four English bowlers already reaching this stage
a clash like this is inevitable.
Both seem confident of the ability to beat the
other so no love will be lost as the 20 frames
are played and the consensus of opinion seems to
lean towards Paul Moor emerging the victor. But
who knows? The proof will be in the bowling.
"That was the best I have bowled this year,"
said a very pleased Paul Moor. "The pressure out
there today was tough. Dom was the man on form
and this was really not a match I wanted to play
as I've been struggling a bit. I'm pretty
confident when I get out there on the lane. I
really wanted to prove myself in this match."

Quarterfinal Match 3:
Good
friends Osku Palermaa of Finland (pictured,
left) and stocky Englishman Stuart Willams
(right) do battle in the second match this
afternoon. Palermaa has that devastating
two-handed delivery that gives so much rotation
and power to his bowling ball and Williams'
seemingly nonchalant approach will certainly
give the crowd of spectators something to talk
about.
Williams was lucky to get through his
first-round encounter against American Diandra
Asbaty, a bit of a squeaker to say the least.
It couldn't have been much closer after the
three pin difference of the first game result
but Palermaa put on the pressure over the last
ten frames to clinch the match.
"With this format you have to do your best,"
commented Palermaa after the match. "I just did
what I needed to do in the second game, I got
the front eight (strikes) and the match was
over. It was disappointing to leave the 10-pin
in the ninth frame, and I thought' not
again'.Although we're good friends, I don't
think Stuart will hold this against me.
Hopefully, I will have another four games but my
aim now is to win the semi-final against either
Kirsten Penny or Chris Barnes."
Stuart Williams didn't seem too downhearted. "I
did my best but my ball wasn't hooking at the
back end as much as it has over the past couple
of days."

Quarterfinal Match 4:
Another encounter involving
an English player comes in the third match of
the day with Europe's top ranked female player
Kirsten Penny taking on the 2006 World Tenpin
Masters champion Chris Barnes of Texas, USA.
Penny disposed of WTM rookie Ryan Lalisang of
Indonesia in her opening match whilst Barnes
emerged the victor of the encounter with another
tournament rookie with Israeli Or Aviram.
Both contenders agree that
things get a little easier after the first round
but nobody will predict a walkover for the past
champion. Penny has a consistent and powerful
delivery and will certainly be looking for a win
and a place in the semi-finals.
At the end of what must have been one of the
most exciting matches ever seen on the World
Tenpin Masters lane, it was a mightily pleased
and relieved Chris Barnes who won his place into
the semi-final.
"I don't know about the twenty strikes in a row,
I'm still sore at leaving the 5-7-10 split
yesterday," he joked. "No, I'll remember the
twenty-bagger, and it was a much better
performance than last night. I've got rid of my
mistakes and got to focus on things that work
and give me better results. I like to control
the pocket and my ball reaction today was really
good. The lanes were a little tighter today,
which worked out. The pattern used on this lane
really has no similarity with anything used on
the PBA Tour, the Americans use a lot more shape
of the oil.
"I think Kirsten has the best ball reaction of
anyone in this group this year, the closest is
Palermaa. After my 290 I thought I had better
get another 40 pin lead, otherwise I could get
into trouble as she was almost striking at will.
As it turned out they came in real handy. It was
a lot of fun and I guess with a little more age
and maturity you get to enjoy it a little bit
more. It's more fun when you're striking a lot
and especially when you're ahead by 20 or 30
pins. But she bowled unbelievably.
"It is a unique situation here in Barnsley as
the crowd are always great and respectful to the
players. I wasn't the crowd favorite in that
match but they were really respectful and I like
the way they are so animated. I get the biggest
kick out of that. Counting the Weber Cup, this
is the fifth time I have bowled here and really
with many of the same people in the crowd. Every
time it is fantastic and obviously in the Weber
Cup they are much more slanted towards the
European team but they are always
appreciative of good performances."
All credit to Kirsten Penny for an incredible
performance. "I don't get the chance to play
Chris Barnes very often," she said, "so today I
was determined to make the most of it and enjoy
the match. I did, but I didn't get the result I
was hoping for. I was disappointed I didn't get
that last strike for a perfect game. There is no
shame in losing to Chris and the match was over
when I got up to bowl my tenth frame, so then it
was all just for the 300. I thought I threw a
good last ball but I don't know what happened
and I was quite surprised when it hit light and
left the 2-8, so I'm pretty disappointed. My 546
was a hell of a score, but it wasn't enough,
unfortunately, but I didn't embarrass myself.
"In the practice session earlier, Chris was not
bowling well. I thought he was putting it on a
bit, so I said to Stuart Williams that he's
going to come out an d shoot a massive score. I
didn't realize how massive that was going to
be!"
It was a match well worthy of the memory bank to
be stored for years to come.
