5th BRUNSWICK EURO CHALLENGE
PLAZA BOWLING
SAINT MAXIMIN
FRANCE

March 8 - 16, 2008

FINAL DAY OF QUALIFYING

We're running down the home straight now with just four squads on today's agenda, plus, of course, that dreaded one-game shootout, the Desperado squad in the wee small hours of the night.

It is a case of 'Vive la France' this morning as Kevin Seve could hoist the French tricolor as leader of Saturday's opening squad, finishing just two pins ahead of Aussie Andrew Frawley, credited with bowling for Kuwait on the roster. That final 143 very nearly cost Kevin his place in the talented line-up tomorrow morning.

A 257 in the second game and a 258 in the fifth helped to give Kevin his ticket into the next round on this, his first entry. He can now scrub any re-entry he has reserved and that will surely be taken up by someone eager to make the cut.

There were 15 newcomers on this squad and that brings the total entry so far to 386 so it doesn't look as though the final figure will set any new record for EBT events.

                                                                            *     *     *     *     *
Still they come ...... another 12 bowlers from all over joined the fray in Squad 20 and they had the privilege of watching young Jemma Smith from England (pictured) dominating the group. The daughter of Pauline (Smith) Buck, the double World Cup champion and WBW Hall of Famer, to name just a couple of her honors, Jemma is a force majeur on the battlefields of Europe and it is good to see her bowling so well, on her first entry, too.
Including her 48 pin bonus, Jemma rolled 1,320 and that was 12 pins better than America's distinguished Diandra Asbaty, 2006 and 2007 WBW Bowler of the Year and multi-titleist.
Jemma now shares 15th berth on the qualifying table with fellow countryman Dominic Barrett.
Fifteen players on this squad bettered 'par' but with the cut for 52nd spot now at 1,255 a tough target is being set for those on the final two squads.
But there's always the Desperado Squad for the really desperate!

                                                                          *     *     *     *     *
It's an old cliche, but 'tis said in many sporting circles that the cream always rises to the top and there is no further proof needed in the pudding than to see Mika Koivuniemi (pictured), a handsome Finn but now a PBA exempt pro bowler living in Michigan, United States, as the winner of the penultimate squad. Not only did he handsomely top the 56 on the squad, but his 1,378 now places him in sixth place overall.
It was a Scandinavian affair through the six games as Mika was almost paced by Norway's Tore Torgersen, the newly-elected WBW Hall of Famer who should have had his award presented at this prestigious event. That, unfortunately, has been postponed until a later EBT event.
A Scandinavian trio was completed with Kamilla Kjeldsen of Denmark taking thid place on this squad, beating 1,300 by two pins, including her 48 bonus points.

The entry total has now risen to 405, just beating the 398 set by the Ballmaster Open in January and bad news for those on the cusp as the cut is now 1,259.
                                                                          *     *     *     *     *
Thomas Gross of Vienna, Austria (pictured) left it all to the final squad to put it all together, rolling 1,302 to be the squad leader and in doing so spoiled the party for the vibrant Ghislaine van der Tol of Utrecht, Netherlands, who finished just five points aback in second place.

Thomas finished in 23rd place overall so misses out on the top 16 who will get a bye for step one on Sunday morning when places 17-64, including the six qualifiers from tonight's Desperado squad and the first six squad winners, roll six games. From that group the leading 16 will join qualifiers 1-16 for stage two, best of three games, high seed versus low.

Twelve women have beaten the cut and maybe there will be more from the Desperado squad now honing their skills on the Plaza Bowling lanes.

DESPERADO SQUAD
A field of 90 took to the lanes for the final chance of qualification through the Desperado squad - a one-game on one-lane shootout.
It turned out to be 'ladies' night' as three of the six to successfully emerge from the encounter were those of the fairer sex, dominated by German champion Martina Beckel from Frankfurt (pictured).
For the full Desperado squad standings, see: www.brunswickeurochallenge.com.
