MEN SQUAD 2 - 8 games on short oil.
Game 1:
Remy Ong maintains his privileged place at
the top of the leader board as the valiant 25
move into the second squad bowling on the
short oil condition. These standings, of
course, are just for this squad and do not
reflect the overall situation, but for sure
Ong is still the leader.
Paul Moor, who was tied with Ong at the
conclusion of Squad 1 last night, just had a
170 in this first game.
Game 2:
The highlight of this session was a near
perfecto by Indonesian tenpin wizard Ryan
Lalisang. Eleven solid strikes were followed
by a stubborn 10-pin for a 299, which is the
highest game of this year's WRM to date. Ryan
had one of the perfect games in last year's
World Cup in Venezuela.
Wu Siu Hong og Hong Kong really suffered on
the long oil condition but is much happier on
the short and is now in third place on this
squad.
Game 3:
Osku Palermaa of Finland has taken over
the lead in both the squad and overall
standings after 11 games, just under the
halfway mark for qualifying. The 2006 WBW
World Bowler of the Year has 712, but that is
only one pin ahead of Indonesia's Ryan
Lalisang.
Remy Ong's slip to 173 and 201 in the last two
games have dropped him down the squad listing
but he still holds the runner-up spot in the
overall standings.
Because the women's squad over ran this
morning, this afternoon's schedule is running
just under an hour late.
Game 4:
Wu siu Hong of Hong Kong now leads the second
squad but is still way down the overall table,
fighting back from 25th overnight position.
Manuel Otalora from Colombia has the first
nine strikes in the fourth game but then left
the 3-10 baby split and took out only one pin
for a disappointing 266.
Palermaa and Lalisang are still going at it,
hammer and tongs, to get back pole position
but this short oil pattern is proving
difficult to master, as you can see with Paul
Moor dropping to 24th on the squad and now
seventh overall.
Game 5:
Palermaa and Belmonte are getting closer to
one another and the possibilities arise once
more of a final between the pair of two-handed
artisans. Last Sunday they fought the final of
the Istanbul Open in Turkey and squared their
final encounters 3-3.
The Australian came into contention after a
fifth game 279, the highest game on the Kegel
lanes for a while this evening.
Game 6:
That elusive perfect game has yet to be
bowled. Once again a player had the chance to
be the first, this time it was Stuart
Williams, but a 7-pin stood its ground and
laughed at him.
Stuart is now the squad leader and has his
eyes on the $1,000 squad leader bonus, but Wu
Siu Hong is on his tail.In the overall
standings, Jason Belmonte now has pole
position over Osku Palermaa with Williams
claiming third place.
Game 7:
There's no stopping Stuart Williams right now.
A 278 in game seven sees him 62 pins ahead on
the squad going into the final game and a good
shot at the $1,000 bonus and he also has a 25
pin buffer over Osku Palermaa in the overall
standings.
Alex Liew of Malaysia also improved his
standings with a 278.
Overall, the players seem to have adjusted to
the short oil pattern now. It is easier for
those who have played on it before, but a
culture shock for those hitting it for the
first time.
Game 8:
For the second night on the trot, highway
robbery was committed against an English
bowler. Last night Remy Ong had the audacity
to tie with Paul Moor after the Englishman had
led each game until
the
tenth frame of the eighth game. Tonight,
Stuart Williams had a sixty pin
advantage going into the last game but he was
pipped at the post by just three pins when
Osku Palermaa of Finland rolled the
tournament's first 300 game and that cost the
Englishman one thousand dollars and made the
Finn much richer.
The pair are also one-two in the overall
standings and the other renegade two-hander,
Jason Belmonte is in third place.
"Stuart had some bad breaks and I had some
good ones," commented Osku after the squad.
"But that's bowling."
Looking forward to tomorrow's baffling dual
lane condition, with one lane on short oil,
the other on long, Osku said: "I'm quite happy
with that set-up. I bowled on it last year in
the World Ranking Masters in Kuwait and I
think I hit over 1900 over the eight games."
Osku's father, Timo has been watching all his
talented son's scores on the websites and is
very pleased with his progress. That is
fighting a seven hour time difference, so
maybe it is good that it is Saturday tomorrow.
Our thoughts were confirmed a little later
when Osku's father sent us an email saying:
"What a day to follow. Great bowling and, of
course, Osku's perfecto. What more can a
father ask for, I wonder. Time to go to bed
now as in Helsinki it is 03.36!"
