QubicaAMF BOWLING WORLD CUP
ST. PETERSBURG
RUSSIA

November 3 - 11, 2007

Past champions (L to R) Peter Ljung, Sweden; Mohammed Al-Qubaisi, United Arab Emirates and Michael Schmidt, Canada have ambitions of taking home this prestigious BWC trophy once again.
But has Jason Belmonte got a cunning plan to thwart those wishes?

Now just Michael Schmidt remains in the race but he's up against some stiff opposition with three others from the American zone, three Europeans and the leader a lone representative of the Asian zone.
Norwegian Glenn-Morten Pedersen must rue missing the cut by four pins and who would have thought that talented lefthander Remy Ong would not make it through to the last eight?
Unheralded Austrian from Vienna Thomas Gross made great strides this afternoon to earn eighth place.
This octet advances to the round robin on Friday.

Luby log: Frontrunner Jason Belmonte of Australia continued his incredible pace through the end of qualifying, posting a 32 game total of 7644 with a record final eight-game series of 2,038. American Bill Hoffman retained the runner-up spot with 7392. Andres Gomez of Colombia was third with 7111.
Others advancing to the match play include Finland's
Petteri Salonen, Brazil's Marcello Suartz, Canada's Michael Schmidt, England's Paul Moor and Austria's Thomas Gross. Schmidt, who won at Slovenia in 2005, is the only surviving former champion.
Belmonte, who opened Thursday action with a 279 en route to a 2038 eight game series, will meet Hoffman in the first round of match play Friday.
Asked how he felt about facing his long-time foe in the opener, Belmonte seemed serene. "I don't play differently in match play," he said. "I just ignore the other guy and knock down all the pins I can."
Nick Cayzer of the Isle of Man said the three-mile walk from the Park Inn to the host center was his
favorite part of the tournament. "I had snowball fights with my friends and the Petersburgers!" - Mort Luby
