Mack, Hoffman, Kent,
Barnes, Jones
Moor, Leandersson, Torgersen,
Koivuniemi, Palermaa
TOTAL: USA 3
- EUROPE 3
Who
would have thought that Chris Barnes would
miss two single pins, a 7-pin in frame six
and a 10-pin two frames later, thus letting
Paul Moor, well and truly in striking form,
put the first point on the board for his
European buddies?
Tim Mack versus Mika
Koivuniemi. Now there's a dream match, but
it looked like being a nightmare for the
American when Koivuniemi started with the
first seven strikes.
Match three and another
point for Europe as Osku Palermaa, with his
unique two-handed delivery, took Bill
Hoffman to the cleaners despite three single
pins having the audacity to withstand his
power ball.
Doug Kent, the 'rookie' on
the American team this year, buried every
ball deep into the pocket and strung seven
strikes from the fifth to the tenth frames
to upstage Tore Torgersen's 258 by ten pins
and put the Americans' first point on the
board.
And the last singles game
of the evening saw the cream as Tommy Jones
bowled the second perfect game of the Weber
Cup's history to take out the European
captain Tomas Leandersson and bring the
scores to 3-2 with the advantage to the
Europeans going into the Baker team game, an
event the home team are very much inclined
to lose.
Just
for a moment, a very brief interlude, there
were hopes of a European victory in the
Baker team event, the closing game of the
evening, but the irrepressible Tommy Jones
put paid to that, scoring four strikes in
his fifth and tenth frame stints, making the
evening perfect for him, 16 strikes in 16
frames.
What looked like a
stronger American team today was pegged back
with perhaps some surprising scores and
Torgersen was unlucky to lose his match
after hitting 258.
If this standard of bowling is going to stay
with us through the weekend then we are in
for a rare treat indeed.
