THE MASTERS:
It's the Jason Belmonte show again! The
Aussie with the unique two-handed delivery set
a sizzling pace over the first two of the 16
game Masters' set, hitting 265 in the opener,
then, having found a high scoring line, upped
the ante to a 279 in the second game.
Defending champion Alex Liew is putting
his stamp on the proceedings, currently
holding second place but a long way behind
Belmonte.
Pacesetter in the ladies' sector is Choy
Poh Lai of Malaysia, currently on a 245
average to lead the talented field. Diandra
Asbaty, the defending champion, wasn't quite
quick enough out of the starting gate but will
be sure to dominate as the Masters progresses.
Four games down the pike and it is no surprise
that Jason is still in first place, despite
dropping to a lowly 203 in the third game.
However, the big surprise is that the
irrepressible Tim Mack has sunk to last place,
up until now not even hitting anything near a
200 game. These lanes call for a power
delivery and maybe the recent shoulder surgery
won't take that punishment. Choi Bok Eum of
Korea, who won the Youth Boy's Open this
morning is continuing in good form, chasing
the leaders from sixth place. He played ten
games with an average of 227.9 for the win.
Vanessa Fung from Hong Kong has taken over as
front-runner in in ladies' division. The
daughter of Hong Kong TBC president Vivien
Fung, Vanessa has a slim pin advantage over
Malaysian Zandra Aziela.
Jason back in the high scores with a 276 in
the fifth to up his buffer over Alex Lim to 69
pins. Choi Bok Eum comes up to fourth with a
244.
But over on the ladies' lanes it's musical
chairs at the top of the table as Zandra
Aziela takes over the lead and just 90 pins
separate the top eight places.
INTERNET WENT DOWN FOR TWO HOURS!
A big surprise as the crest of the wave on
which Jason was riding collapsed over the last
two games of this first block.
A humble 211 and
192allowed
local bowler Daniel Lim to slip into the lead
and this morning's youth champion Choi Bok Eum
into second place. Currently it is a third
place tie as Alex Liew and Joung Seong Joo
each claim 1848.
It was frustrating here, trying to cope with a
failing internet connection, but not as
frustrating as it was for Tim Mack as he was
in the unusual last place right through the
last five games and rolling only a 179
average. He bagged just one 200-plus game in
his series.
This is a tough condition with conditioner
just to 45 feet, so the power balls are
scoring well. However, it is the diminutive
figures of Zandra Aziela, Siti Safiyah and
Esther Cheah, all Malaysian Elite squad, who
take the top three places in the ladies'
division. The Elite squad claim seven of the
top eight places right now in the ladies' set
and first and third in the men's..
The second block of the Masters, a further
eight games, continues at 09:30 Saturday
morning, then the top six qualifiers will
contest the televised Stepladder Final, the
ladies bowling first, then the men.
