An incredible entry from 29 nations and currently a total of 290-plus competitors are making the 3rd San Marino Open one of the elite tournaments of the year.
It's impressive Rosen Bowling Center and extraordinary organization has even attracted players from as far as Malaysia and Hong Kong. Look at the standings and you can see how well they have enjoyed these 18 lanes and the fantastic attractions of this tiny ancient republic.
Paul Moor of England (pictured) is the current leader.

England's Paul Moor (pictured, left) hit 1,484 to take current control of this 3rd San Marino Open, dashing aside the hopes of the Malaysian's to dominate to top octet.
Paul, currently second in the European Tour rankings to Osku Palermaa of Finland, has finished in the top eight of the past two San Marino Open's and
would very much like to take home the champion's trophy on Sunday night.
"This is one of the best European Tour events," he commented. "It is a good setting and a very nice bowling center."
Paul and Osku will be vying later to capture enough ranking points to either become the new leader or remain at the top, depending on the current position.
A very welcome visitor to Europe, competing on the European Tour for the first time, is George Lambert from Canada. Having been here for such a short time he has not had a chance to take in the wonderful local scenery as yet. "There's definitely nothing like San Marino in Canada," he joked. "I'm having a fabulous time here and went to Venice yesterday. I never realized that it is an island and nobody else seems to know that either.
"The lanes here a playable, seemingly very similar to home, and the center is very nice and so well kept."
Unfortunately, George's score this afternoon was a lowly 1,276 over the six-game qualifier, but he aims to come back to better that.

STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD 11, FRIDAY 09:00

Osku Palermaa's (pictured, right) outstanding posting of 1,526 on last night's late squad looked pretty impregnablebut Friday morning saw a challenge from young Sharon Koh, 17, on Team Malaysia (pictured) , coming on strong with 1,498.
"I went up to the top of the 700-meter high mountain to visit the impressive castle last night," she told us. "Up there I felt on top of the world and I'm sure that inspired me to bowl well here this morning. I was chasing team-mate Siti Safiyah and managed to overtake her in the sixth game to top the squad and finish in second place overall."
Sharon is on her second visit to Europe, following on from last year where she won the Masters' gold in the World Youth Championships in Berlin.
"The European Tour is very good and San Marino is so beautiful," she added. "I would love to come back very soon, but at the moment my objective is to win a place in the Malaysian ladies' team for the Women's World Championships in Mexico. There are seven of us here and only six places to go. I don't want to be the one who has to drop out."

STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD 12, FRIDAY 13:00
Now the French come into the picture as Serge Frouvelle, 47, a business man from Toulouse, hit 1,473 in this squad to surge up into the leading pack. Bowling in his second San Marino Open he is hoping to improve on his 25th place finish here last year. "Like the Malta Open, this really is a tournament I recommend to my friends," he said. "I like to take several short holidays through the year and San Marino is one of the top choices. The scenery is beautiful, the bowling center owners are so friendly and, of course, there's the sun."
Serge had a high game of 278 in his six-game block, which helped well to his average of 245.5 and now fifth place overall.
Another player on the crest of a wave is recent Malta Open ladies' champion Ghislaine van der Tol from Utrecht in the Netherlands. She is now eighth in the overall qualifying standings.

STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD 13, FRIDAY 17:00
Belgium's Jean Marc Lebon, 41, (pictured) now residing near Lille in France, ruled out 'unlucky 13' for the 17:00 squad and topped the scores with 1,410, which will not put him amongst the leaders but should see him safely into the top 48 come tomorrow night. A well-known pro shop expert, currently with two stores, Jean Marc tries to compete on as many European Tour stops as he can. "We do not have many scratch tournaments in Belgium and France," he told us, "so I compete to see my real value against these top bowlers."
Jean Marc played six out of 13 Tour stops and his best finish so far is third, achieved in the recent Belgian tournament. This is his third time in the San Marino Open. Previously he made the cut but was knocked out by one of the German Goebel twins.

STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD 14, FRIDAY 21:00
Honors to Turkey on this late night squad as Ebru Ozogluuntur from Istanbul topped the scores before disappearing into the moonlight. Ebru hit 1,380, a 230 average which, unfortunately, might not make the cut when the dust of qualifying battle subsides on Saturday night.
Ebru is a long-time Turkish national team member and was a bronze medalist when the Mediterannean Challenge Cup was hosted here by the Rose 'n Bowl in San Marino in 2006.

STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD 15, SATURDAY 09:00
The unusual situation of just four pins separating the top five players on this squad and each from a different nation. Young Nikolay Ovchinnikov from Riga, Latvia tops the scores with 1,363, which is currently right on the cut. Next comes Qatari Abdulla Harroon with 1,360 and then the trio on 1,359 are Mark Buffa, Canada; Leonidas Maragkos, Greece; and Jesper Agerbo, Denmark.
