'SOUTH OF THE BORDER - DOWN MEXICO WAY'

To those fond words from the age old ditty, we can also add some verses from 'It happened in Monterrey, not so very long ago', and other well-known song from about the same era.

The 2007 WTBA Women's World Championship moves from the highly successful 2005 event in Aalborg, Denmark and there are currently 43 nations and 225 competitors lined up to vie for the honors on the lanes of AMF Bol Opisado in downtown Monterrey. A couple of nations, Israel and Guatemala have sent lone competitors and the Netherlands Antilles has just two. Norway and Belgium will be able to field trios teams with three competitors apiece.

The whole event is under the capable wing of genial Jose 'Pepe' Aguilar, 62, (pictured) a surgical dentist by profession, who has been the president of the Mexican Tenpin Federation for the past seven years, who has the splendid reputation of being a really hard worker and does a great job. "We bid for this Championship at the 2003 WTBA Congress in Malaysia," he told us. "We really wanted players worldwide to come to Monterrey to enjoy our beautiful city and experience our renowned hospitality.

"It was difficult getting financial support but the Monterrey government supported us well and we were able to get enough corporate sponsorship, so now we hope to break even.

"What has been disappointing is the lack of participation by many of the South American countries. We did expect to have at least some entries from Chile, Panama, Argentina, Honduras and Nicaragua for instance.

"Personally, I would like to say a big thank you to all the participants, coaches and officials - Welcome to Mexico. And I add more thanks to the happy band of 120 volunteers who are going to make this Championship a memorable success."

The Championship is preceded by the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) Congress on Wednesday, August 29 and the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ) Congress on Thursday, August 30.

The team managers' meeting, practice sessions and opening ceremony will be held on the Friday and competition gets underway with the Doubles event on Saturday. This will be followed through the week with Trios, Five-person Teams, Singles and Masters, culminating in the Masters' finals on Saturday, September 8.

The victory banquet will round off what all is hoped will be a highly successful and very enjoyable World Championship.
