SQUAD 'A' - First six of twelve games:

A short opening ceremony preceded the initial squad taking to the lanes for this celebratory tenth Malta Senior Open. Genial Eden SuperBowl general manager Neil Dent (pictured) extended a special welcome to those competitors who had attended each event since 1998 and to those coming to Malta for the first time, wishing them all a memorable and enjoyable tournament.

Neil took it upon himself to perform the ritual of rolling the first ball of the 2007 Malta Senior Open, scoring nine and leaving the 7-pin. This was two pins better than when he opened the 2005 tournament.

Maybe he's hoping that nobody has noticed that he is not wearing bowling shoes for this epic feat.


As there were 27 Swedes in the first squad this morning, it is not surprising that both the male and female leaders after the first block of six games come from Sollentuna and Gothenburg respectively as Torbjorn Karlsson (left) tops the men with 1,378 and Lena Dahlgren (right) for the fairer sex on 1,202.
Torbjorn is paying his third visit to the Malta Senior Open - "A great tournament and an extra week of summer sunshine," he commented. His best finish to date was eighth in 2005. But Lena is here on the island for the first time and is thoroughly impressed with her performance. "I've just got to keep this up over the next six games," she said.
England's Ian Horrell had the first opportunity of bowling the event's first perfect game, hitting the first nine strikes of game six, but left a 7-split with the first ball of the tenth frame, ending with just 265. He had hit a 280 in game four.

Standings after 12 games:

Karlsson dropped to second place after the twelve games had been completed and the squad lead was taken over by fellow-Swede Stig Hermansson, but there are only seven points between them. Both had 260-plus in the eleventh game, Stig a 269 and Torbjorn 265. Their totals exceeding 2700 should see them both well into the qualifiers come Saturday morning.

A change for the ladies' pole position in this squad, too. Sonja Carlsson-Ostlund pipped Lena Dahlgren into second place  in the all-Swedish women's field to complete her stint with 2,423 points, 121 ahead of Lena.
