Honors on home ground as Spanish veteran
Marcial Ovide sets the pace on the opening
squad on Tuesday evening, closely followed
by yet another well-known international
Spaniard, Lluis Montfort.
Nicole Sanders, one of the Dutch stars,
comes directly from the San Marino Open to
hold third place.
* * *
Wednesday's first of two squads brought
higher scores with Wu Siu Hong, 22,
(Pictured with countrywoman Vanessa Fung)
fresh from San Marino, upping
the
ante with a six-game series of 1,380 to set
the new high.
"The shot here is totally different to San
Marino," said the lithe lad from Hong Kong.
"I've had to change from an outside line to
much deeper inside and use different bowling
balls."
This is Hong's second trip to the European
Tour. Last year he won the Vienna Open in
Austria. He will go home from here on Monday
and then travel on to Jakarta for the
Indonesian Open at the end of the week.
Another to exceed last night's total was the
1,315 from Alix Yoan of France with a steady
series spoiled by a 163 in his opening game.
Stubborn corner pins seem to be ruining many
strings of strikes and the high game at the
moment is a 266 from Lluis Montfort.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD 3 - Wednesday, July 25,
21:00:
Hong was back into the battle tonight,
looking to improve upon his 1,380 shot in
Squad 2 and also on the squad was
the
ubiquitous Tim Mack, now moved from New
Jersey to Indiana. The lanes are tougher
than last week in San Marino, where the
pattern was 5:1. Here it is reduced to
2.5:1, so it will be interesting to note the
differences.
Last year, Jari Ratia, 28, from Helsinki,
Finland (pictured) was an early squad leader
and he found himself in that position
tonight, just before the clock struck
midnight. But his xxxx was not enough to
knock Hong off his perch and Hong Kong still
rules the roost.
Tim Mack's charge fizzled out from the third
game, so he will have to bowl again to beat
the cut which last year came around 1,280.
The leading lady shows Hong Kong in the
frame again as Vanessa Fung is the leader
but in ninth place overall on 1,271, so she
needs to return to the battle.
It's nice to see six nations in the top ten
so early in the conflict.
Lluis Montfort Rife has upped the high game
now to 279.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD 4
- Thursday July 26, 13:00:
Once
again it is a case of 'two hands better than
one' as Finnish star Osku Palermaa, the 2006
World Bowling Writers International Bowler
of the Year, came home with 1,341 to top the
fourth squad. Unfortunately for him,
tournament leader Wu Siu Hong's 1,380 was
just out of reach so Palermaa slots into
third place overall, just behind fellow
countryman Jari Ratia.
Finnish national team member Piritta Kantola
has taken over as top woman with 1,333, and
Palermaa has equalled Rife's high game of
279.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD
5, Thursday July 26, 17:00:
Two
strong challenges came from Martin Paulsson
of Malmo, Sweden hitting 1,371 and Stuart
Williams from The Wirral, England (pictured)
on 1,378, which brought him into second
place overall.
Williams, the recent Malta Open champion and
2007 World Ranking Masters champion, fell
just two pins short of the 1,380 set by Wu
Siu Hong of Hong Kong with this his first
entry. He won this event back in 2003 and
must be a serious contender for this year's
title on his current form.
"With a large entry and restricted
re-entries, I just can't re-enter as much as
I would like, but maybe that's a good
thing," Williams commented after his squad
this evening.
Once again the lead in the ladies' division
has changed, the frontrunner now being Mai
Ginge Jensen from Denmark, cruising home
with 1,359.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD
6, Thursday July 26, 21:00
Tim Mack o f
the United States (pictured) is back in
business, topping the squad with 1,368 to
put himself among the leaders. The ex-pro
who has 70 international titles in 28
different countries aims to sweep the
competition aside and take home the
Barcelona trophy to his wife and baby
daughter. Also over the 1300 mark was Alix
Yoan of France (1328) and third place went
to Wim Claessens of Belgium (1278).
Defending champion lefty Paul Moor from
England has a date with the lanes at 09:00
tomorrow and the lane condition looks to be
in his favor. The three-time European
rankings champion is determined to get back
to the top of this year's ranking table,
currently led by Osku Palermaa.
One more member of the 279 Club is Christian
Racpan of Germany.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD
7, Friday July 27, 09:00:
And now we have a new name at the top of the
leader board. Krista Pollanen from Lahti,
Finland (pictured) has knocked the
opposition
for six by posting 1,464, including her 48
pin ladies' bonus, to top the previous high
of 1,380 by 84 pins.
This is the first time in the Barcelona Open
for the childrens' sports instructor,
although she did compete in the Catalonia
Open - Trofeu Galasa at this center back in
March. Krista has been a member of the
Finnish national team for four years and is
looking forward to the trip to Mexico in
early September for the Women's World
Championships in Monterrey. "Barcelona is so
nice," she told us. "The weather is
fantastic, the people so nice and it is a
wonderful city in which to be a tourist.
I'll have plenty of time to look around as I
don't need to bowl again until the finals on
Sunday."
Defending champion Paul Moor from England
has yet to find his pace and line, hitting
1,313 in his opening set this morning.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD
8, Friday July 27, 13:00:
George Lambert, from Hamilton,
Ontario (pictured) now looks completely at
home on the European Bowling Tour. He very
much
enjoyed
the San Marino Open last week, despite
finishing in 31st place, and aims to better
that this time in Barcelona, hopefully
finishing high enough to pay for the trip.
The lithe Canadian showed his intentions by
stamping his authority on Squad 8, finishing
top of the squad with 1,353, which places
him seventh overall.
"It is quite a big change in lane condition
here, compared with San Marino," said
Lambert. "I was bowling a line well outside
there, but in Barcelona it is a different
story, moving in to 20-30. I have a squad
booking tomorrow, but I don't think I will
use it unless I feel I need to loosen up."
He continued: "I really like the formats of
the Tour in Europe. They are so much better
than in the States. These formats give you
so many more chances to come back."
Defending champion Paul Moor struggled a bit
this time, just coming home with 1,298. The
slim Englishman is on the waiting list for
the 17:00 squad but has a reservation on
tomorrow morning's 09:00 session.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD
9, Friday July 27, 17:00:
It
is Finland back in the frame again as
26-year-old Timo Ahlo from Tampere
(pictured) rolled 1,347, the highest score
of this squad, to surely place in the
qualifiers for Sunday's finals. Timo makes
car windshields (windscreens) for his modest
living and reckons he had a clear view of
the pindeck over his six-game series. This
is his second visit to Barcelona, having
placed eighth in the Catalonia Open earlier
in the year. "I'm pleased to hit a good
score on my first entry, especially as I am
very lucky to be here," he told us. "My
travel agent made a mix-up of my flights and
when I got to the airport my ticket was for
the wrong day, so I had to go on the waiting
list. Luckily there was an available seat,
so I got here on time.
"I got very good carry for this lane
condition. It wasn't easy but the pocket was
quite wide. I didn't suffer with corner pins
and tripped a lot of 4-pins." Timo eases
into ninth place overall.
Robert Andersson of Sweden had his chances
to become the squad winner but ran into a
4-7-10 split in the tenth frame of his final
game, so forfeited his chance. He is now
16th in the overall standings.
STANDINGS AFTER SQUAD
10, Friday July 27, 21:00:
No
challenge to the leaders on this late night
squad. The top score came from England's
Dominic Barrett (pictured) with 1,332, ten
pins ahead of Dutchman Michael Sassen. These
were the only two players to top 1,300.
To ease download time, Squads 11-14 on
