The Finland versus Denmark match was played
on the long oil pattern. The Denmark versus
England match was played on short oil. With
England and Finland now taking the bronze medals
home, it will be both Danish teams to fight for
the gold and silver. FINAL:

The final was played on the short oil
pattern. So, despite a unique play-off finals
for the doubles event, it was the tournament
leaders that garnered the laurels and take their
rightful place at the top of the podium for gold
medals
Number three seeds, Brondsted and Kjeldsen take
silver, well deserved for a fighting final, but
they were always playing catch-up to the Jensen
sisters.
Finland and England will each be awarded bronze
medals.

Danish coach Christer Backe was, of course,
overjoyed at winning both gold and silver medals
at this opening event of the 2006 Euopean Women's
Championships. "I didn't know they had never
played together in a major event before," he
commented, "but I was sure from the beginning they
would play together in this event. And it was good
that they really wanted to play as a team.
"Some people are critical of the new format of
finals in each event but we have to accept these
changes to keep the sport up to date. I am really
pleased that they set a new record for the 12
games and then went on to win the gold.
"Britt and Kamilla did very well, too, and it was
a very enjoyable final, both for the players and
the spectators."
"I really liked the final," added Anje Ginge
Jensen, who won two bronze medals in the Women's
World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark last year.
"We played the short pattern against England and
that was a very close game. We were both very
nervous in the final and I got some very lucky
strikes." The next event, the Trios, commences
Tuesday morning at 10:00 local time. Return to Main Page
