FRIDAY OCTOBER 20:                       EUROPE 2 - USA 4

The wonderful perfect game by Paul Moor in the opening match against Jason Couch set the scene for what turned out to be a truly exciting evening for this seventh Weber Cup. The enthusiastic crowd at this superb Barnsley Metrodome were treated to the memorable spectacle of what we believe to be the first-ever 300 game on live television and the excitement of that surfed through the evening session.

Maybe a result of 3-3 would have summed up the evening beautifully, but that dreaded Baker Team finale proved to be the downfall for the Europeans and the pendulum swings in the American's favor.

"It's not bad. Just OK," commented European team captain Tomas Leandersson. "I really thought that the evening would end with a tie as we should have won at least one of the last two games, but still the Baker seems to be our major trouble. Perhaps the name of that should be changed - or something!"

American skipper Tim Mack smiled at taking the lead: "This was a very positive performance, so of course I'm pleased, but there is still room for improvement as most matches went down to the tenth frame, it could so easily have been 4-2 against us.

"Weber Cup rookies Jason couch and Tommy Jones bowled great, as I expected. It was tough for Jason to combat the 300 game from Moor, but if he bowls 258 every game over the next two days I will be pleased."

What is claimed to be the first perfect game ever screened in Europe came with Paul Moor's 300 in the opening match of the 2006 Weber Cup.
"I couldn't have wished for more," said Paul. "I got lucky when I needed that most. It was all unbelieveable. This brings my total of 300 games up to 24."

Two bowlers well experienced on America's Pro Bowlers faced faced one another in this second match. Tim Mack, now well recovered from shoulder surgery is about to become a father for the first time and is anxiously phoning his wife in between matches tonight, but no news is forthcoming at the moment.
Norway's Tore Torgersen knows the feeling well, his daughter Tone was born just five months ago.
Good buddies they may be, but a good finish from Mack saw him home and clinch the win.

Bill (The Joker) Hoffman matched the good-humored Jens Nickel for the first four frames and then fell slightly behind. However, all was not lost and three strikes from the sixth frame and striking out in the tenth brought him ten pins to the good when the dust of battle had settled.

Chris Barnes, the 2006 World Tenpin Masters champion, a title won here in Barnsley in April, looked as though he was going to sneak into the winners' circle by a single pin, but European team captain Tomas Leandersson struck out in the tenth frame to make the match two-all.

Tommy Jones took to the arena lane like a duck to water. Forecasts that he would not thrive in this cockpit atmosphere went way by the board and every ball was solid in the pocket. In fact, it looked as though he would have the second perfect game of the evening.
All credit to MIka Koivuniemi as his bowling balls didn't arrive in time and he just managed to get hold of a ball and get it drilled just before the match. Without any practice whatsoever he rolled a really good game, but was unfortunate enough to come up against a foe on top of his form.

Europe have what is nothing less than a terrible record of Baker team matches. Bill Hoffman ribbed Tomas Leandersson after tonight's match by stating that the score is now 21-8 in the Americans' favor. We'll have to research that fact sometime. Hoffman did suffer the only split of the session, the 7-9, in the second frame of the Baker match, but that did not lose the match for the visitors.

Competition resumes on Saturday at 13:30 and 19:30.
