This clash of the left-handed Titans showcased bowling at its very best as
local lad Paul Moor strung seven strikes to open his first game and very nearly
repeated the feat in his second. Lofty Van der Veen looked totally lost and
ceded the first game win to Moor by a massive 89 points but rallied in the
second to come very close to clinching the second leg.
Moor totalled 19 strikes overall and looks unstoppable. His next match will be a
semifinal against Germany's Jens Nickel, the defending champion and the man that
put Moor out of the final last year. That will surely bring standing room only
to this packed arena in the Barnsley Metrodome, certainly the best crowd of
spectators in the nine-year history of this unique event.

Two open frames as a starter did not do Jason 'Hollywood' Belmonte's
confidence much good, nor did the sight of the Malaysian stringing strikes,
following the pattern of previous leftie Paul Moor.
Belmonte is not accustomed to being nearly 80 pins adrift after the first game
and his bid to make up the gap went awry with a split in the second frame of his
second game. As Liew hardly left the strike pocket and scored the second highest
aggregate of this year's tournament, Belmonte entertained the crowd by bowling
one-handed with a borrowed ball to hit three strikes and bowled between his legs
at a split in the final frame.
Liew finished with a 268, the highest single game so far and now awaits the
result of the final match of this session to see who he will meet in the
semifinal.

What a turn up for the book! Michael Schmidt
lost the first game by the narrow margin of five
pins but was quick to make up the deficit with
seven strikes in a row in the second game. When
Barnes, working on three strikes, hit just a
nine-spare in the ninth frame it looked to be
all over. Schmidt just had to stay clean and the
semi final place was his. But the fickle finger
of fate had other ideas. Schmidt seemed to relax
and bowl a slower ball in the ninth frame and
was to face the big four (4-6-7-10). The fairy
tale ending came for the American with a tenth
frame strike out, forcing the Canuck to double.
This he failed to do and the slim Yank goes
through by just five pins. Return to Main Page
