JOHNSSON TAKES OVER
Helen Johnsson of Lund, Sweden (pictured),
arguably the best woman bowler in Europe, put
her foot firmly on
the
throttle Tuesday evening to overtake previous
leader Mai Ginge Jensen of Denmark and top the
leader board going into the final eight-game
block of qualifying on Wednesday.
Johnsson's total pinfall of 3685 is only
315 pins short of the 4000 hit by men's
current leader Osku Palermaa of Finland and
gives her a very nice average of 230.31 per
game.
There is no defending champion in the
ladies' division this year and the early
favorite Diandra Asbaty of the United States
currently holds fourth position. England's
petite Lisa John has sneaked into third place.
The cut will come tomorrow afternoon for
the top 24 ladies to continue their affray
with a further eight games. sitting on the
cusp right now is Austria's Evelyn Tutschka.
