November 2, 2006
Our World Cup trip began on Thursday,
November 2. My mom, dad, and I caught a
flight to Caracas at 1pm. Easy flight to
Caracas through Atlanta…. Only 3 ½ hours
from Atlanta. I was impressed with the
airplane food… it was some sort of stuffed
pasta. Pirates of the Caribbean played while
I worked on Kaizen by diandra. (check it out
at
www.kaizenbydiandra.com)
I was able to get a lot done mainly
because I couldn’t go anywhere, and found no
other distractions sitting in row 22 seat
A.
Passport control was no trouble at all. The
first thing I noticed when stepping in to
Venezuela for the first time was the
spotless floor in the airport. Everything
was very clean. It was a very good first
impression.
Grabbed our luggage and headed out to find a
group from the World Cup there to greet us.
We were the last to arrive, so we took our
luggage out to the bus and shoved everyone’s
luggage in. It was a big bus, but not big
enough for everyone’s luggage. They piled
the luggage high inside the bus on the
seats.
The driver popped his head in the bus and
said, 10 minutes, be right back. In Spanish
of course.. but thanks to my four years of
Spanish in High School I know the basics.
10 Minutes in Latin American time isn’t the
same as 10 minutes in American time. 45
minutes later we were off. The hotel was
about an hour away.
We arrived at Tamanaco Hotel
Intercontinental around 1am. After spending
40 minutes in the check-in line, we arrived
at our rooms. I noticed a few guys in the
lobby with White Sox bags. I asked them if
they were from Chicago, and it happens that
they actually play for the White Sox. I
thought that was extremely ironic. Baseball
is very big in Caracas. Maybe they came to
do a clinic or just to visit their coach’s
home country.
The rooms were clean, not very new, but very
functional. The TV worked and we actually
had US stations to watch. I especially
liked watching E!
November 3,
There are 2, 144 bolivars to $1. That gets
confusing. Too many zeros for me. We
figured out if you take off all the zero’s
and divide by two, or thereabouts… you get
what we are paying in dollars.
Had lunch at a restaurant by the pool. I
was impressed I understood what the woman
asked us when we arrived at the restaurant.
In Spanish, she asked if it was ok to sit us
at a table of six. There were already two
women there.. but if we didn’t mind sitting
at their table we could sit right away. We
decided we were hungry enough to do that.
I ordered an awesome pasta dish. Broccoli
sauce, with ham. My dad got Pizza, and my
mom a chicken sandwich. I was relieved to
know we wouldn’t starve all week.
Hung out outside for some of the day, walked
around hotel to some of the small stores to
find some water. Caracas is a beautiful
place! The mountains are really great. We
were told by many not to wander around by
ourselves, and especially not at night.
Everyone is very warm and friendly.
Although many do not speak English, they try
hard to communicate. You would be surprised
how far nonverbal communication goes.
We knew Dan, Jeri, and Lucas would get into
Caracas at 3pm so they would probably be at
the hotel by 5pm but when we asked a
tournament official about that he said no
way. The traffic during the day was
terrible. They would be 5 hours on the
bus. Yikes! I gusss it’s lucky we came in
really late at night.
They
finally arrived at 9pm!
November 4, 2006
We knew that breakfast was included in our
rooms, however, we had no idea what that
consisted of. We were pleasantly surprised
when we went to breakfast and had a very
large buffet of breakfast food to choose
from. Eggs made to order, bacon, oatmeal,
cereal, lots of fresh fruit and killer
juice! I had some fruit loop cereal which
is a misnomer because they were actually
fruit balls. No loops.
Our hotel sits on top of a mountain. In
order to get down to the street we have to
walk down a very large, steep hill. We were
determined to do that today to go to the
shopping center down the road. Unusual to
see Christmas decorations up in the mall
already! Weird. I guess since they don’t
celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas is the
next holiday up. First time I have heard
Christmas music in a very long time.
After walking around the mall for a little
bit, we got dressed and headed for the bus
with our equipment. It was great to see all
the countries staying at our hotel gather
together to get on the bus. It’s always
such an honor to be representing the United
States doing what I love to do.
We were on the bus for about 45 minutes and
checked in balls right when we got there.
There was a policeman on motorcycle
following beside the bus the entire way to
the bowling center. When you arrive at the
bowling center you are met by a lot of
soldiers carrying guns and other weapons.
You wouldn’t believe this, but one of the
soldiers in the bowling center actually had
a sword on him! Whoa. People carry
swords?
The bowling center has a lot of room in the
settee area, a lot of seats for spectators,
and very high ceilings. The space feels
big. Interestingly enough, they were still
pounding the lanes in when we got there.
They had just installed them, and the
scorers. They were doing the finishing
touches. They cut it pretty close.. doing a
complete renovation of the lanes and scoring
units in just 7 days! These lanes have
never been bowled on. They are HPL and who
knows how they will play. I have never ever
bowled on brand new lanes before.
Opening Ceremonies was tonight. Although
long, it was interesting to see the
Venezuelan life displayed throughout the
ceremony. Dancers with masks paraded around
the lanes bringing us closer to their
culture. I loved catching up with old
friends I have met throughout the years. I
even met a guy from Uzbeckistan! I
introduced myself to him because I wanted to
say I met someone from Uzbeckistan. It was
neat he knew who I was, and was very
friendly. After the ceremony they had a live
band there playing authentic Venezuelan
music (very loudly)
You can tell the Venezuelan Federation is
very excited to have the World Cup in their
county. Their pride oozes throughout the
center. Everyone here has been very
accepting, and very helpful. I expect great
things this week.

Today was the day of Official Practice.
It was exciting to be the very first
bowler EVER to throw a bowling ball down
lane 35! The surface is BRAND NEW! New
pins, new lanes… The first few shots felt
and looked a little weird but then I
settled in and got comfortable. Jeri and
I did a great job narrowing down my
bowling ball selection. I can only check
in 6 balls. The condition seemed very
playable and if you have the right angles
into the pocket, the carry is very nice.
Dan had a great look in practice! We had a
lot of laughs at our team dinner at the
restaurant we always eat at by the pool
with the parrots.
Exciting John came in tonight!! He comes
in on the same flight Darlene Baker, Bill
Hoffman and other USBC-ers are on… Got in
at 1am.
November 6, 2006
You would never believe when I had to woke
up today! I set my alarm for 4:40am.
Erg. We caught the bus at 6am… they banked
on a lot of rush hour traffic in the
morning. Still trying to figure out why
the bus from the other hotel left 45mins
after ours did. Hmmm. They got to sleep
in.
We were up too early for breakfast so they
had corn flakes for us at the bowling
center. How nice. I think I was still
sleeping when I was eating my corn
flakes—don’t even remember them.
Bowling was good today—no complaints. I
started with the front 7…good way to get
out of the gate. Jeri and I made great
ball decisions throughout the day that
resulted in optimum carry. I had two sub
par games… Because of transition, I got
caught in the middle. There is so much
more bowling left—so every day we will
become more familiar with the lanes. We
will take more notes, and be more prepared
for when we see it again.
Dan bowled well tonight too. He is in good
position. He got off to a slow start, but
finished very strong. He played the lanes
much further right than me. Whatever
works!
Long day— Time to sleep.
November 7, 2006
Jumped on the 10:30am
bus that didn't leave until 11am,
again. Why do we get to the bus on
time!? A bazillion people asked for a
USA pin today. They have taken a
liking to us. It's nice- We have
lots of USA stuff to give out to
them. Seriously- a bazillion people
asked me today for a USA pin. I
counted.
Watched Dan bowl the
1pm squad. He fought through it. I
could tell that the lanes were a
little different today. After he
bowled, and they re-oiled our lanes
the women's began their second block
of qualifying at 6pm.
I could tell early on
that the pattern was a little
different. The lanes definitely
didn't play the same as the previous
day. Today to get 3 in a row was
tough... yesterday it was super easy
to get those 3 baggers. I committed
to each shot I threw, and managed to
end up at +100 for the day. We ended
at 11pm! The only positive to that
is that there isn't any traffic on the
way back to the hotel.
November 8, 2006
Dan bowled super early
today. Struggled a bit but really dug
deep. The lanes again seemed
different that the first two days.
You never know what you're going to
get.. especially after all the strip
and re-oils. You have to take each
day as new and not have any
preconceptions.
My squad started at
1pm. My first game I had two pocket
seven tens in a row on Lane 1 and 2!
That pair has been playing funny all
tournament. Not a fun way to start.
Managed to shoot 200 and was looking
forward to moving lanes. It was a slow
start, trying different balls
throughout the first few games.
Couldn't find the right match up to
kick out the corner pins. My inferno
gave me an ok look, but I could tell
it wasn't matching up perfectly. I
decided to throw a ball I haven't even
taken out of my bag yet, the Red
Zone. Good call! I shot 279 after
switching balls. Nice bold move for
Jeri and I. I finished the day with
258 and somehow managed to move up to
2nd place. It pays to be patient!!
The bus ride back to
the hotel was dreadful. Stop and go,
stop and go. The rush hour traffic
here is something else. Had dinner at
the restaurant by the pool again,
because, well, we have no choice.
That is the only restaurant in our
hotel. The food is good though, so we
are lucky.
Have to be up at 4:45
am tomorrow... Lots of bowling left to
do.
November 9, 2006
What an exciting
day! I had my highest 8 game block
and my company Kaizen by diandra
"officially" launched! (www.kaizenbydiandra.com)
Neat..
Before I started
bowling, John asked if I thought I
would use my Absolute Inferno at
all.. I said I wouldn't because it
gets through the heads too clean.
He suggested I sub in a ball, and
sub out the Absolute Inferno. I
figured I had nothing to lose,
since I wouldn't be using that
ball. I brought in the Radical
Inferno, pin down. I didn't even
think I would start with it, but
during practice it was looking
really good.
The Radical read
the lanes unbelievably-- and I
ended up using it all 8 games. I
carried better than I have in any
block. It set up perfect. Good
suggestion!
The lanes played
different again-- which is to be
expected. I knew I still had a
long way to go, so I just really
stayed focus on myself and didn't
look around at anyone's scores. I
didn't even look at my total
score. I took it frame by frame
and made the best shots I could
make. After the first 8 games I
took over the lead but I had no
idea what the pin margin was. I
didn't care.. I just focused on
one shot at a time.
We had a three
hour break while the guys bowled
their first 8 games. It was tough
to sit for three hours, but I kept
myself busy. I gave out plenty of
Team USA pins, took a ton of
photos with Venezuelan fans, and
signed lots of stuff! They are
some of my biggest fans. It's
nice to have their support..
Bowled the second
eight games with no
preconceptions. Since the lanes
have been different each time I
step on them, I knew to keep an
open mind. I couldn't start with
the Radical this block because it
did not read the lanes soon
enough. I pulled out my Red Zone
which is really smooth. It read
the lanes great. I only used the
Red Zone for two games, then it
began to read the lanes too
early. I bounced between the
Inferno, Radical, and Red Zone
trying to find the right
combination. The block ended on a
good note, as I was still in the
lead by quite a bit.
Going into
qualifying tomorrow I am seeded
first. 3rd bowls 2nd in a best of
three games match. The winner
faces me in the best of 3 games
match. I feel good about this
tournament.. I came here to follow
in great World Cup experience..
with Shannon and Lynda, and
Lucy.... My goal was to represent
the US the best way I can.. and no
matter what the outcome, I know I
have done that.

Finals Day! Woke
up and headed downstairs to have
breakfast. I ate what I've been
eating all week. Fruit Loops..
but, not really loops.. They
were Fruit Balls... and some
oatmeal.
Headed on the
bus and realized that this was
the last time I would take the
bus to the bowling center. When
we got to the center, they were
still arranging the seats and
getting everything set up. They
told us that we could practice
on the finals pair for about 20
minutes, then a pair on the low
end would be turned on for more
practice, while they re-oiled
the finals pair.
The first match
was between Lisa John and Mai
Ginge Jensen. While I was
practicing from afar, I noticed
that the match went to the third
game and Lisa John won the
match. I didn't pay too much
attention when I was practice..
I was just making sure I felt
comfortable, and getting into a
nice rhythm. I kept singing the
song I sang ALL week. KT
Tundsall, "White Horse and a
Cherry Tree." It kept me in the
right rhythm all week.. then I
got Jeri singing it.
My goal in the
finals was to completely stay
within myself. I wasn't going
to look at my score, I wasn't
going to watch her bowl. I sat
down, talked to Jeri and stayed
somewhat distracted while she
bowled. I drank about 7 bottles
of water during practice and the
match. I felt calm and ready to
go. I kept taking really deep
breaths and staying relaxed.
When I couldn't catch my breath
and I was ready to bowl, I would
take extra time and make sure
that I was ready to go.
I used a Radical
Inferno. I felt like I had
right with it, and I had a
little hold. After each shot I
sat down next to Jeri, talked
with her about my shots and
didn't pay attention to Lisa's
shot. It was nice to have John
sitting right behind us too. He
always gives me so much
comfort. More times than not I
could tell when she struck
because the crowd told me.
I did a great
job putting my ball where I
wanted to, and staying solid.
One bad break on the right lane
caused me to leave a pocket
seven-ten split. That was the
only bump in the road. Lisa
split in the same game so we
were even going into the second
half of the last game. After
winning the first game I didn't
feel much pressure because I
knew I couldn't lose everything
in that game. Knowing you have
one win behind you takes the
tension off a bit.
In the second
game, I struck in the 9th frame,
and doubled in the 10th. Little
did I know that it forced her to
double in the tenth. It's
always more fun to win on the
lanes, and not sitting back..
After Lisa threw her first shot
and didn't strike, I looked at
Jeri and said, "Oh my gosh."
She said, "What?" Very
concerned.. I said, "I just
won."
It was an
emotional win because my
husband, John was there and my
parents were there to see
everything. When they are
around me, I feel like I can't
lose. They all give me so much
strength.
I eyed the
trophy closely the first time it
came into the bowling center..
It was the Venezuelan
Monster
much like the Mascot they used
all week. It was made of stone
and was breathtaking. That's
what I was going for.
It felt sooo
amazing to hold up the cup for
the first time. All the hard
work, all the time, practice,
everything... all paying off in
that moment. Since that day in
May when I got the call from
Jeri telling me I would be
bowling the World Cup, I thought
about it every single day. I
visualized what would happen,
and how events would play out.
When that day
finally came, it wasn't new to
me. I had seen it in my mind
many times. I didn't feel
nervous. I just had to go
through the motions.
The United
States has had great success in
the World Cup. I wanted to
bring the cup back home-- It was
my main goal.. to do it for
everyone else. This isn't about
me.. it's about everyone who has
helped me along the way. All
the coaches, all the support I
have had. This one's for them.
There is no
feeling like the feeling you get
hearing your national anthem
play in another country. All
week I knew how sweet it would
sound. But when the time came,
the sound was even sweeter than
I imagined it would be.
