LADIES - ROUND TWO - TOP 36:
Four more games down the route and the
distaff group now cuts to 18, all of whom will
be counting the cash on Sunday evening, if not
before.
Those elite 18 will carry on later this
evening with yet another four games, then
their field will cut to eight for tomorrow's
round robin.
They
might be planning some form of civic reception
back in Boras, Sweden for their local heroes
Torbjorn Halling and Barbro Hjerten (pictured)
when they return home as both have led their
respective men's and ladies' divisions from
the time of their qualifying rounds. Both bowl
for the same club and they were even joined by
Ewa Krantz, also from Boras, when she was tied
with Hjerten for the ladies' lead after the
twelve qualifying games.
Hjerten now has just a slim 30-point
advantage over Jan Hodge of England as the
18-strong group moves forward to Round Three
and, as aforementioned, the cut to just eight
for the round robin.
Helga Schroeder squeezed into the next
round by twelve points to remain in the fray
in 18th place, ousting Erna Buysse. Defending
champion Farida Pascoal-Blom of the
Netherlands is still within striking distance
of staying in contention, but she will need a
lot of those strikes to progress from her
current thirteenth place to eighth, or above.
Doris Camilleri, the local heroine and 2003
champion, has regained her form and is bowling
the second highest scratch average of the
group with 192.50, so should book her place
into tomorrow's final rounds. Camilleri's high
game of 249, set in the first qualifying
round, and stays the target for the ladies to
beat to claim the €250 high game award.
There are still representatives of eight
nations fighting for honors in the ladies'
field. They will return to sort things out at
19:00.
