SWAMPED BY THE SWEDES
The opening squad of the 2005 Malta Senior
Open was composed of 33 Swedish bowlers and
one lone Englishman, Michael Begley from
Torquay. Unfortunately, he placed 17th on the
opening squad so has a lot of work to do when
he plays his second qualifying block.
 Torbjorn Karlsson, 66,

Sweden's capital Stockholm set the pace today,
hitting 1,325 to top the leader board. This is
his first attempt at the Malta Senior Open
title and is delighted at bowling so well on
the opening squad. "I've been here a couple of
days and have really enjoyed touring Malta,"
he explained. "It is a wonderful island and
I'm sure I will be back each year for this
enjoyable tournament."
Ladies' division leader is also a great fan
of Malta. Playing her second year, Gun
Alstrom, 68, also from the Stockholm region,
placed 14th last year and is determined to
beat that position this time. "I really looked
forward to coming back as I was very impressed
with the SuperBowl and the island delights
last year," she said. "I'm pleased to have
bowled so well this morning as I have not had
a good start to the season. I normally average
around 175 but have dropped to 160 at the
moment. This event will boost my confidence."
The stalwart members of 'A' squad will
return to the fray on Thursday afternoon at
4:30 to complete their qualifying stint.
