Larsen Tops the Opening Squad

The opening squad of the 2012 European Women’s Masters took to the lanes of the superb Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona on Thursday night

and after the six games Sweden’s Rebecka Larsen, Jr. took the tournament lead with an impressive 1403, shooting a high of 259 in her final game.

“I bowled well across all 12 lanes,” she commented after the squad. “I only changed bowling balls once and had to make minor changes to speed and approach positions throughout the six games.”

The top 24 players after the five qualifying squads will progress to the finals on Sunday and the leading four will bowl best of three-game finals.
Local player Cristina Sanz bowled the high game so far, a 298, leaving the 6-10 pins on her final ball.

Squad 2, scheduled for 15:00 on Friday, had to be cancelled due to tunnel blasting taking place in a subway station on a new metro line being built under the bowling center. The explosion was hear in the center but no tremors were felt and no damage was done.

Squad 3 will take to the lanes at 19:00 CET on Friday evening.

Bob Johnson has received more national writing awards than any other bowling writer — close to 70 over the course of his 40-year career. He began at age 16 as a staff writer and then assistant editor for the weekly Pacific Bowler newspaper in his native California, and within three years was writing feature stories for Bowlers Journal.
