With Young-Seon Cho’s 254-195 victory over Chris Barnes in the gold medal match of the Men’s Masters event, Team Korea has wrapped up the overall national title in the WTBA World Championships at Sunset Station’s Strike Zone Bowling Center in Henderson, Nev.
Using a 3-2-1 point system for gold, silver and bronze medals, Korea enters the World’s concluding events — the women’s team and men’s team gold medal matches — with a 25-20 lead. Team USA is in both gold medal matches, and could push its point total to 26 by sweeping. But Team Korea has qualified for the women’s gold medal match, and thus is assured of no fewer than two additional points — which would give the team a total of 27.
That said, the team event gold medals are the most coveted by the bowlers, coaches and national governing bodies, and those medals are still to be awarded. In the World Championships’ closing events this afternoon, it will be the USA vs. Korea for the women’s gold, and the USA vs. Finland for the men’s gold. Going into those matches, USA and Korea are tied in overall gold medals at four.
