Ask the Coach: Sticky Situation

Q: Where should I put tape in my thumb hole — on the side, or in the back, directly facing the nail?

— J. Brodecky, Madison, WI

A: I have always put tape directly in the back of the thumb hole, but that may vary if your hole is drilled so there’s a larger gap on the side. Try both methods and see how it impacts your release. Purchase the individual sections of tape that are available at your pro shop, or buy a kind that does not stretch (to avoid thumb abrasion during the release). Tape comes in varying sizes and thicknesses, but I prefer the thicker tape in the one-inch size.
